Which Spells Effectively Counter The Beholder'S Antimagic Cone?

I still get a little thrill whenever I find a clever way around a beholder’s antimagic eye, and my go-to checklist is short and practical: Antimagic Field (if you can cast it outside the cone and overlap it) or Dispel Magic (aimed at the eye, DM-dependent) are the most direct counters, though both rely on table rulings.

If you don’t trust those rulings, use instant-effect damage spells like fireball, cone of cold, or meteor swarm so the harmful effect happens before the cone can suppress anything. Alternatively, make something permanent and physical: wall of stone (made permanent by concentrating the full duration), fabricate or stone shape can create real, nonmagical barriers that block the cone. Pre-place glyphs or traps that trigger outside the cone and use mundane weapons when inside the cone. Talk tactics with your party and DM — timing and positioning beat trying to spam ongoing magic into the eye every time.

There are a few neat tricks I've picked up over years of beating my head against beholder lairs in 'Dungeons & Dragons', and they mostly boil down to two ideas: either deny the cone a line to your party, or make your effects nonmagical/permanent so the cone can't suppress them.

First, the big hitters: Antimagic Field and Dispel Magic. Antimagic Field is the blunt instrument — if you can cast it from outside the cone and get it to overlap the eye beam, a lot of tables rule the two antimagic effects cancel each other where they overlap, effectively neutering the cone in that space. That said, it's a huge concentration spell and timing/location matter, and some DMs rule differently, so discuss it before relying on it. Dispel Magic is more surgical; in many groups it can target the beholder’s antimagic eye as a magical effect and suppress it for a round or two (higher-level castings or a successful ability check help). Again, this can be table-dependent but is often allowed and can be a lifesaver.

If you want to avoid the cone entirely, think permanence and instantaneous effects. Instant spells that do their job the moment they're cast — fireball, cone of cold, meteor swarm, chain lightning, power word kill, etc. — deal damage immediately; the magic that produced the damage doesn’t need to persist inside the cone. Pre-casting or firing these from outside the cone or before the beholder swivels can work wonderfully. Even better are spells that create permanent, nonmagical matter: wall of stone (if you concentrate for its full duration it becomes permanent and nonmagical), fabricate, stone shape, or otherwise reshaping terrain before the fight. Those let you block the cone with real rock or metal. I once had our wizard quietly cast wall of stone during a camp watch and make a permanent barricade—beholder couldn’t get a clean shot and the fight was so much less terrifying.

A few extra notes: summoned creatures, ongoing magical effects, and buffs are all vulnerable inside the cone; invisibility, protection spells and most conjurations will be suppressed while in the cone. Glyph of Warding or traps pre-set to trigger outside the cone can be excellent. Bottom line: brute-force instant spells, pre-battle terrain alteration to create real obstacles, or high-level antimagic tactics tend to be the most reliable approaches — but check with your DM on how dispel/antimagic interactions are ruled at your table.
