What Are The Spicy Chapters In Haunting Adeline?

A look at my copy, Chapter 13, ‘The Locked Drawer’ is the title of this scene. The title of this chapter is a beautiful example of misdirection. We expect a puzzle to be solved, a secret to be revealed. And we do find a secret. But not the kind of old historical secret we expected to find. No, the secret of the present danger is found to be living in the house with her. The "locked drawer" is the concealed intent of the antagonist. This has now been unlocked and is being pointed at the protagonist. The metaphorical wordplay in the chapter title is a quiet clue to the deeper meaning of this particular scene. It’s not just a ‘scary’ moment but also a revelation of the true, human, monster in the story.

I picked up 'Haunting Adeline' after hearing mixed reviews about its dark themes, and wow, it definitely doesn’t shy away from intense content. The book has some pretty graphic scenes, both in terms of violence and intimacy. There’s a heavy focus on power dynamics, and some moments are downright unsettling—think psychological thrillers meets dark romance. The author doesn’t gloss over the gritty details, so if you’re sensitive to explicit material, this might not be your cup of tea. That said, the writing is compelling in a way that pulls you into Adeline’s world, even when it’s uncomfortable. The tension between the characters is palpable, and the explicit scenes serve a purpose in building that atmosphere. It’s not gratuitous, but it’s definitely not subtle either. If you’re into dark, morally complex stories, this one will stick with you long after you finish it.

The music box gets wrapped up so nicely in this book. The very thing that filled us with so much terror at the hands of the stalker is now grasped by Adeline and turned into her own possession. And interestingly, she never gets rid of it. She chooses to keep it as a memory to work out with, as part of her story. And it’s not about erasing the memory of the stalker for her. It’s about owning it as part of her story. The little, quiet gesture is more powerful than any dramatic quote in the book. These subtle character moments amidst all the conclusion of the plot are what make the book’s ending work for me.

H.D. Carlton. This woman’s name makes me think of so many things but mostly of the feelings she evokes in her readers. For so many, her name means “this book made me feel things I wasn’t prepared to feel” and that’s a pretty powerful legacy. Whether those feelings were good or bad is sort of beside the point. She made people feel things deeply. In an age of endless nearly indistinguishable-from-each-other content, it’s pretty cool to write a book that leaves an indelible mark. Some marks are scarlike, others thrilling. Carlton’s authorship of deeply affecting work is her defining characteristic and sets her apart in the contemporary literary conversation.

The amount of hype this book received had me expecting it to be a masterpiece. I read it through KU. The writing was good enough for me, the plot was interesting enough for me to keep reading like I would watch a really crappy TV show for, but it wasn’t life changing or anything. I think a lot of the drive to read this for free comes from a place of FOMO and people having really high expectations because of the genre (Gothic romance, etc.). If people read this thinking it’s going to be the second coming of Gothic romance they may be let down. However, if people read it with the understanding that it’s just a really dark, dramatic, pulpy page turner, then I think most people would enjoy it. And maybe that can help people gauge how much they want to read it and whether or not they’re willing to pay for it or wait for it. It’s just a really fun read, but not a literary masterpiece or anything.

Killing Adeline continues the story of the original Haunting Adeline in new and interesting directions. It is even possible to enjoy this sequel if you didn’t read Haunting Adeline first. This book continues to follow the story of Adeline, finding out more about her and discovering some very surprising events along the way. I read Killing Adeline within two days of starting it – it is a very engaging read. The story is very immersive with lots of well-drawn scenes. It’s easy to get caught up in the story as the tension increases with higher and higher stakes as the story unfolds. Fans of suspenseful sequels will find lots of dark content and also a greater exploration of the main characters in this book. In fact, I was on the edge of my seat reading this the whole time.

By the way, the gun in this scene is not as scary as the rest of the psychological manipulation afterwards to further isolate and control Adeline after the fact. Yes, the book actually gets even darker after this scene, but in a completely different and even more disturbing way. So, while you may be biting your nails for this scene at page 289, you can actually breathe a sigh of relief after it’s over. But, be forewarned, the threat of violence becomes a recurring undercurrent for the rest of the book, even when there is no physical gun present. In short, this scene opens up a whole new door of horror and that is why I mentioned this page number.

I’m trying to find a physical copy of Haunting Adeline to add to my bookshelf and the page count seems to vary greatly between “versions”. Most copies of the original self-published paperback from 2021 seem to be around 384 pages. However, the book has since been picked up by a wider distribution deal and re-printed under new ISBNs. The formatting, margins and font size have all been tweaked slightly in some of the “new” prints which has resulted in some copies having as few as 380 pages or as many as 388 pages. The core story remains the same in all of these “versions”. It’s worth noting, however, that there is a special edition hardcover of Haunting Adeline that was released in 2023, which includes the author’s handwritten notes, additional scenes, and artwork. This edition is significantly longer than the paperback and truly is a different version of the book. I found a copy of this hardcover at a local bookstore, and it had a slightly different weight to the cover than my friend’s copy, although it had the same number of pages (his was a paperback). The page numbers between common print runs of Adeline and Zade are generally the same. I went to a local store and found the copy to be the same number of pages as my friend’s copy (even though the book covers felt slightly different in weight) – details for publication, etc. included on back of book and also on front of store packaging and, of course, ISBN. (I understand that ISBN and the exact page number may or may not be of importance to you.)

I would say the actual moment when the gun is pulled out is Chapter 26, but that scene begins reading about Chapter 23 or 24. The entire time the two main characters are in the cabin, the reader feels the tension building with every conversation. Carlton sets up the coziest cabin ever and then slowly reveals that it is a trap. Every glance between the two characters is loaded. The firelight that usually makes a cabin feel so warm and toasty now feels like interrogation lighting. The whole scene is a masterful use of slow-burn tension that reaches a sudden and very graphic climax. Finding the trigger for all of this is like reaching the peak of a very steep mountain. The release is sudden and brutal.

Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton. H.D.’s plot is advancing nicely. In this installment, a friend of Adeline’s, Gigi, is murdered by the stalker, Zade Meadows. Gigi had happened upon the stalker breaking into Adeline’s house and the stalker thought that Gigi posed a threat to his obsessive, possessive relationship with Adeline. The stalker kills her in order to eliminate the threat to his twisted plans to be with Adeline. It was a planned and Pre Meditated Murder. This man is capable of the worst of humanity and is revealing himself to Adeline in the worst possible way. What makes the moment powerful within the dark romance context is that it’s a turning point for Adeline and forces her to confront the danger that Zade presents in more depth and complexity. She is already isolated from the world but Gigi’s death makes her feel even more alone and frightened. Her subsequent actions are shaped by what has happened and she comes to a place of greater understanding of Zade, and the bond they have is complex and murky and possibly even morally wrong. Yes, this is a shocking moment to many readers and some hate how brutal Carlton makes Zade’s methods in order to define the proper stakes of this genre of fiction. Others hate it because it is so very brutal within the context of this story as a romance. Nonetheless, it is a turning point and a defining moment of the story and thus very central to its unflinching atmosphere.
