Don't overlook 'The Shadows Between Us' by Tricia Levenseller. The Shadow King, Alessandra's love interest, is shrouded in literal and metaphorical darkness. His power is tied to shadows, and his rule is absolute and feared. While he's not a classic sorcerer, his magical nature and morally ambiguous reign are central. The book is a standalone with a cunning female lead and a deliciously dark romance.

Can we get more love for antiheroes who stay antiheroes? I'm tired of the redemption arc where love makes them soft. Give me a couple that's powerful and morally grey together, embracing their darkness as a team. I think 'The Never King' (a Peter Pan dark retelling) kind of does this—the male lead is unapologetically villainous and the heroine grows to match him. It's erotically charged and dark.

Check out 'The Hurricane Wars' by Thea Guanzon. Talasyn is a light-wielder and Alaric is a shadow-wielding prince. They're literally magical opposites forced into a political marriage, and Alaric's command of shadow magic and his ruthless wartime tactics put him firmly in the grey zone. The enemies-to-lovers tension is off the charts, and it's very much in the high-stakes, high-steam romantasy lane.

Cursed, mated, and in for the fight of their lives…
Warlock Nate Hawthorne just wants a cup of coffee. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Because instead of precious caffeine, all he gets is cursed by a pack of werewolves who want to use him for his magic. Now the only way to fix the damage is a mate bond to a grumpy and oh-so-sexy alpha in the rival pack, who happens to hate him. This is so not how he wanted to start his day.
Ian Armitage never intended to take Nate as his mate. The Hawthorne family can’t be trusted. Ian knows that better than anyone. The fact that he’s lusted after the way-too-gorgeous man for years? Totally irrelevant. Ian’s just doing what is necessary to protect his pack. This whole mating arrangement has nothing to do with love and never will. That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.
Nate and Ian will have to work together if they have any hope of staving off the pack’s enemies and averting disaster. That’s assuming they can stop arguing (and keep their hands off each other) long enough to save the day…

Some cravings are too sinful to confess, too dangerous to speak aloud. '𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒' which are whispered in the dark, written between trembling thighs, and etched in the silence after desire has burned through reason.
Every fantasy in these pages is a secret you shouldn’t want, yet can’t resist. Every character is temptation draped in silk and sin. Every ending leaves you aching for just one more taste.
There are desires you bury deep, the kind that scorch your soul with shame and hunger in equal measure. But sins don’t stay silent forever, they claw their way out, whispered in the dark, confessed with trembling lips, and written in the heat between forbidden bodies.

I tend to find these heroes more in paranormal romance than high fantasy lately. The vampire/werewolf/demon archetype is inherently gray. Jeaniene Frost's 'Night Huntress' series has Bones, a centuries-old vampire assassin. He's charming, lethal, and unapologetic about his nature.
His morality is a vampire's morality: he protects what's his, and the rest is fair game. The heroine, Cat, is a half-vampire hunter, so their entire relationship is a clash of worlds. The gray area is in their negotiation of her humanity and his reality. It's fast-paced, sexy, and full of action. The 'gray' is a fundamental part of his character, not a phase he grows out of.
Honestly, most of the interesting magic-users in 'The First Law' world by Joe Abercrombie qualify. Bayaz is the obvious one—presented as a wise guide but revealed to be a manipulative, millennia-old schemer whose 'greater good' justifies horrific acts. Then you've got Sulfur, his shape-shifting apprentice, who embodies ruthless loyalty. Even the Magi of the Old Time, like Khalul, are framed through the lens of vengeance and fanaticism. Their magic isn't sparkly or wondrous; it's a tool for control, and its wielders are politicians and warlords first. The ambiguity isn't just in their actions, but in the very history they've written to paint themselves as necessary evils.
Honestly, half the fun of this trope is seeing how different authors define 'gray.' Is it cynical pragmatism? Trauma-driven ruthlessness? Intellectual amorality? Spiritual corruption? The recommendations in this thread alone cover that whole spectrum. Makes you realize how versatile fantasy can be when it steps away from pure good vs. evil.
