Where Are Studios Investing In Full Immersion Production Technology?

When the tech side of my brain lights up, I start mapping where the smart money flows: physical clusters around LA, London, Vancouver, and Wellington, and fast-growing hubs in Atlanta, Sydney, and certain parts of Europe. Studios and post houses are investing in permanent LED volumes and XR stages so directors and VFX teams can work in-camera with live, interactive backgrounds driven by Unreal. That change was cemented publicly by how 'The Mandalorian' showcased StageCraft, and since then vendors and studios have been racing to build comparable stages.

On the engineering front, investments are heavy in camera-tracking systems, timecode-synced LED playback stacks, low-latency render farms, and LiDAR/photogrammetry pipelines for rapid scene capture. Volumetric capture suites are being set up in creative cities — LA, London, Berlin, and even Shanghai have players offering full-body, multi-camera rigs to create 3D assets for XR and virtual production. Audio departments aren’t ignored either: immersive mixing rooms supporting Dolby Atmos and object-based audio are being paired with these stages so the sensory experience isn’t just visual. Studios are also funding in-house R&D and training programs to grow talent who understand both cinematography and real-time graphics, which in my experience is the single most crucial piece of the puzzle — technology alone doesn’t make great shots, but the right crew does.

Globally, I see a two-track investment pattern: big legacy studios and streamers making multi-million-dollar bets on permanent virtual stages in LA, London, Vancouver, Atlanta, Wellington, and Sydney; and a distributed ecosystem of smaller volumetric and virtual-prop houses in tech-forward cities like Berlin, Seoul, Shenzhen, and San Francisco. Those smaller studios often specialize — one might focus on facial capture and neural retargeting, another on full-dome projection for theme parks, while yet another builds turnkey LED walls for advertising agencies.

Beyond the physical stages, cloud services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), real-time engines (Epic’s Unreal, Unity), and middleware (camera-tracking vendors, LiDAR processing tools, and volumetric capture software like Depthkit-inspired workflows) get serious funding. There’s also movement toward sustainability: virtual production reduces travel and large-scale set builds, which has pushed some companies to market their LED stages as greener options. For me, the most fun part is seeing indie filmmakers and game studios adopt these tools — the technology used on big-budget shows is leaking down to smaller creators, and that changes what stories we can tell and how immersive those stories feel.

I can feel the buzz every time I walk past a soundstage now — the industry is pouring cash into LED volumes, real-time engines, and volumetric capture like never before. Two paragraphs barely contain it: one part tech obsession, one part location strategy. Major studios in Los Angeles and London remain hotspots because of talent and legacy facilities, and you’ll find expanded LED volume stages at places like Pinewood and the ILM-associated facilities that backed 'The Mandalorian'. Vancouver and Atlanta have become magnets thanks to tax incentives and an established VFX and production workforce, so a lot of virtual production infrastructure is popping up there. Wellington still leads in performance-capture and creature work thanks to Weta's influence, and Australia's Sydney and Melbourne are building serious capabilities too.

Aside from geography, investment is going into particular stacks: Unreal and Unity-driven real-time rendering, high-end camera tracking rigs, integrated LED + motion control, facial and body capture booths, and volumetric studios that let you create 3D people and environments you can re-light later. Cloud rendering and collaborative pipelines are also big — studios want distributed teams to be able to work on the same virtual stage. Live events and virtual concerts are borrowing the same tech, so investments aren’t just for film and TV; advertising, games, and streaming platforms are all funding lab-like experimental spaces. I love watching how quickly small crews can now pull off shots that used to need entire weeks of location prep — it’s exciting and a little addictive to follow.
