What's fascinating about 'The Grip of It' by Jac Jemc is that the cursed object is, again, the house, but the curse manifests as spreading bruises on the walls and on the wife's body. The fate of the couple is to have their relationship and sanity eroded by a presence they can't define. It's a psychological thriller with supernatural elements, written in a fragmented, tense style that makes you feel the creeping invasion of their space and their minds. The ambiguity is the real horror.

I'm always chasing that feeling of an inescapable curse. 'The Auctioneer' by Joan Samson is an older, quieter novel that builds incredible dread. The cursed object here is more abstract: the influence of the charismatic auctioneer who comes to town. He starts taking people's possessions, then their livelihoods, then their very freedom. The fate of the community is sealed by their own gradual complicity. It’s a supernatural thriller about a curse that wears a smile and uses social pressure, making the doomed fate feel horrifically plausible.

Don't sleep on 'Horrorstör' by Grady Hendrix. It frames a cursed object narrative within a haunted IKEA-like store, where the cheap, flat-pack furniture itself becomes a conduit for something malevolent. The fate of the overnight employees is tied directly to interacting with these 'artifacts' in a space designed to be soulless. It's a clever, modern, and genuinely creepy take on how a cursed object doesn't have to be an ancient relic—it can be a Billy bookcase with a sinister past.

I recall 'The Return' by Rachel Harrison being a fun, creepy read. The cursed object is the remote hotel where four friends reunite after one disappeared for two years and came back... changed. The fate of the friend group is to unravel what happened to her in the woods, while the hotel itself seems to feed on their tensions and secrets. It's a relationship-driven thriller with a body-horror undercurrent, where the 'curse' might be contagious and the setting amplifies it.

Fate never forgets what it marks.
She and Caden are forged in blood and fire—child soldiers trapped in a war that steals their innocence and chains their souls together.

For a quick, fun read, 'Meddling Kids' by Edgar Cantero is a love letter to Scooby-Doo, but with real Lovecraftian horror. The former teen detectives reunite as adults to investigate the case that ruined them, involving a cursed lake, a monstrous entity, and a haunted mine. The investigation is a nostalgic, funny, and genuinely scary trip.
The 'cursed object' is the location and the legacy of their trauma. Cantero’s prose is playful and cinematic, switching between narrative, script format, and letters. It’s a perfect blend of mystery, horror, and 90s pop culture nostalgia that takes its cursed premise seriously while having a blast.
The environmental tie-in is a great slow-burn tool. A book bound in the leather of a hanged man causes the air around it to grow perpetually cold and still, as if in a noose's grasp. A ship's log from a doomed vessel makes the room feel like it's gently rocking, even on solid ground. The object doesn't just create psychological dread; it physically alters its immediate surroundings in subtle, persistent ways. The haunting isn't in the text; it's in the atmosphere the object drags with it, a pocket of another, wrong reality.
I've read a lot in the genre, and 'Anubis Curse' is on my maybe pile. The Egyptian mythology hook is solid, and the initial setup with the archaeologist and the cursed tomb artifact has a fun pulpy energy. But I found the pacing in the middle third really dragged for me; it gets bogged down in historical conspiracies when I just wanted more direct supernatural menace. The protagonist's internal monologue can be a bit repetitive too.
That said, the climax delivers some genuinely creepy set-pieces involving the god's judges. If you're deeply into Egyptology-themed horror, you might overlook the slower parts. For a casual thriller fan, though, there are tighter, faster-paced options out there. I finished it, but didn't feel the urge to immediately hunt down the sequel.
