An English Writer

An English Writer

The novel is mainly about the forgotten British poet/writer named C. J Richards who lived in Burma/Myanmar in colonial times and he believed himself as a Burmophile. He served as I.C.S (Indian Civil Servant) and when he retired from I.C.S service, he was a D.C (District Commissioner) and he left for England a year before Burma gained its independence in 1948. He came to Burma in 1920 to work in civil service after passing the hardest I.C.S examination. He wrote several books on Burma and contributed many monthly articles to Guardian Magazine published in Burma from 1953 to 1974 or 1975. Though he wrote several books which had much literary merit to both communities, Britain and Burma (Myanmar), people failed to recognize him. The story has two parts: one part is set in the contemporary Yangon (then called Rangoon) in 2016 context and a young literary enthusiast named “Lin” found out unexpectedly the forgotten writer’s poetry book and there is surely a good deal of time gap that led him into a quest to know more about the author’s life. The setting is quite different comparing to colonial Burma and independence Myanmar (Burma), early twentieth century and 2016 which is a transitional period in Myanmar. The writer’s life is fictionalized in the novel and most of the facts are taken from his personal stories and other reference books. It is a kind of historical novel with a twist and it has comparatively constructed the two different periods in Myanmar history to convince readers, locally and abroad more about history, authorship, humanity, colonialism, and transitional development in Myanmar today.

Which English books are ideal for beginners to read?

I'd recommend short, punchy modern classics that pack a lot into a small package. 'Animal Farm' is an allegory you can read in an afternoon, but it gives you a complete, powerful story with layers of meaning.

The language is simple and fable-like, but the satire is timeless. Finishing a book that's both easy to read and intellectually weighty is incredibly rewarding and shows that 'beginner' doesn't mean 'shallow.'

Books that ease you into English without overwhelming you are pure gold. I'd start with 'Charlotte’s Web'—E.B. White’s simple yet beautiful prose makes it accessible, and the emotional depth keeps you hooked. Another gem is 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry; its dystopian world is intriguing but written with clarity that never feels convoluted. For something contemporary, 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio tackles heavy themes with straightforward language, perfect for building confidence.

If you’re into mysteries, Agatha Christie’s 'Murder on the Orient Express' is surprisingly approachable—her pacing and dialogue flow naturally. And don’t overlook graphic novels like 'Persepolis' by Marjane Satrapi; the visuals support the text, making comprehension a breeze. What I love about these picks is how they balance simplicity with substance—no watered-down stories here, just great writing that meets you where you’re at.

The most progress I ever made was when I stopped reading to 'study' and started reading to 'relax'. I'd set a timer for 20 minutes, get a cup of tea, and just read. No notebook, no highlighter, no looking up every third word. If I could follow the gist, I kept going. The words I kept seeing over and over, I'd eventually look up. The pressure vanished, and my brain started naturally pattern-matching. The book was just the vehicle for a quiet, enjoyable ritual. That mental shift was everything.

Don’t underestimate the power of a great narrator in an audiobook. A skilled performer gives context through tone, pacing, and emotion. For beginners, this can clarify sarcasm, tension, or humor that might be lost on the page. Listening while doing chores or commuting adds more exposure hours.

Start with memoirs read by the author, like Michelle Obama’s 'Becoming'. Hearing her tell her own story in her own voice adds a layer of meaning and clarity. You connect with the speaker directly, which makes the language more memorable.
