Practice Makes Perfect

The night I came of age, the vampire prince Damon couldn’t wait to drag me to his bed. He took me with a desperate, wild hunger that lasted all night long. My body ached, but my heart was full. I’d been his blood servant for ten years. I thought he was finally ready to give me the Embrace, to make me his forever. But after, as he held me and talked on the phone with my foster brother, I heard Marcus ask him in Latin, “So, Master, how did my little sister taste? You know how many men would kill to be in your place? They all think she's a goddess.” Damon's lips curled. “Not bad. A little green. Not nearly wild enough for my tastes.” Marcus laughed. “Well, she's been hopelessly devoted to you since she was a kid. Never even dated.” Then Damon’s voice lowered. “Don't tell Serena about Elena. I have to marry a noble vampire like her in the end, and I don't want her upset.” “A little human like Elena… she's just good for practice.” But Damon didn't know I'd secretly learned Latin just to feel worthy of him. Hearing that, I didn't say a word. I just quietly changed my college application from the University of New Orleans to my dream school, University of Oxford.

When Naomi Sullivan married me, she was already ten million dollars in debt. The news headline read, "Naomi Sullivan Completes Five-Year Adversity Trial, Proves Her Ability to Build from Scratch to the Board of Directors". I trudge home in a daze. When I get there, the five-year-old Shane is playing with the latest limited-edition toy robot. He looks at me with a frosty, distant expression that bears an uncanny resemblance to his mother's. "Mommy told me everything. You failed the trial, Daddy. You care too much about money."

Once again, my wife, Claire Winters, stabbed me with a silver needle. A reporter tracked me down and asked, "Louis Sterling, wasn't your wife, Claire, one of the winners of the National Inspiration Awards from ten years ago? She won the reward for saving you during the earthquake and ending up paralyzed from the waist down, right?" I stayed quiet for a moment, then nodded. "Louis, we're from a TV station, and we're producing a tenth anniversary special about the earthquake." I rubbed my arm, which was covered in tiny needle marks, and looked her straight in the eye. I replied, "That's fine, but can you keep the cameras discreet? Claire isn't used to being in front of so many lenses." However, I never expected that on the very first day of the live broadcast, I would be dragged onto the trending charts and torn apart online.

At our anniversary party, the rose-covered arch suddenly gave way, crashing down in a storm of shattered glass and scattered petals. Raya and I were both knocked to the floor beneath the wreckage. I braced myself on my elbows, a sharp pain twisting deep in my abdomen, and looked up, straight into Asher’s icy stare. “Never thought your jealousy ran so deep. You actually tried to hurt Raya.” His voice was calm, but it sent a chill down my spine. “I didn’t touch her…” I muttered, panic rising as I hurriedly shoved the pregnancy test report beneath the pocket. But his eyes only grew colder. “Taking my indulgence as a license to do whatever you want?” His voice dropped, every word sharp as ice. “Elyssa, maybe it’s time I put you back in line. “Otherwise, you’ll never be worthy to stand by my side as this pack’s Luna.”

Having just arrived at the mysterious and apparently well-put-together Timber Creek School of Fine Arts, a timid nerd by the name of Porter Austin Fulton finds himself out of sorts as much as he had ever been back in his former hometown. That was until he found himself bunking in the infamous Bungalow 13 where the rebellious and the loud had been housed due to a lack of space in his originally chosen dorm. He claims that he'll auction my mother-in-law's organs if we can't pay the ransom of ten million dollars. The live stream infuriates the Internet, and everyone starts searching for my husband, the city's wealthiest man. No one knows he's on a luxury cruise ship, holding an engagement ceremony with his childhood friend. He snarls, "What a dumb excuse to trick me out of my money! I'll burn the money for them when they're dead!"
