I dropped it a while back because the translation quality on some sites was so inconsistent it felt like a different plot. Characters' names would switch spelling between chapters, and technical cultivation terms were a mess. When the official translation started, it was cleaner, but by then the author had basically abandoned the novel, so the 'English plot' is just this frozen thing. The manhua keeps going, adapting beyond where the novel stopped, so now there are two canons. It's a weird situation.

Honestly, I've been following 'Tales of Demons and Gods' for years, from the original Chinese web novel to the manhua and the English translation, and the differences are more about adaptation and pacing than plot. The core story—Nie Li going back in time to save his city—is intact. But the English-translated web novel, especially on platforms like Wuxiaworld, often has to contend with the author's infamous hiatuses, so the 'official' translated plot just stops. That creates its own weird canon where fan discussions and speculation fill the void the original left.
Where you really see a divergence is in the manhua adaptation. The art speeds through arcs, condenses cultivation explanations, and sometimes simplifies character motivations to keep the visual action flowing. Certain side stories or Nie Li's internal monologues about array formations get trimmed. So if you're only reading the English manhua, you get a more streamlined, action-forward version. The novel translation dives deeper into the mechanics of his knowledge from the future, which I prefer. The plot itself hasn't been changed, but the experience of it is totally different depending on your medium.

The plot doesn't differ in terms of major events; it's the same story. But the experience of the plot in English can feel disjointed. You have the officially translated novel, which is a direct translation, then you have fan translations that might use different terminology ('demon spirit' vs 'soul pet' or whatever), and then the comic adaptation which rearranges scenes for visual impact. Sometimes a joke or a cultural reference in the original gets a translator's note in English, which interrupts the flow but adds context. So the 'plot' you get is layered with these meta-textual things. Also, the original Chinese release had a certain rhythm with daily chapters, but reading it in English in big batches changes the pacing dramatically. You binge the buildup to a major battle in one sitting instead of over weeks, which can make some political scheming parts feel slower.

The biggest difference isn't in the story but in the surrounding context. Reading it in English, you're often isolated from the massive Chinese fan community that spawned memes, deep dives into the lore, and theories. So your interpretation of character motives or plot twists isn't shaped by that collective frenzy. You're just taking in the text on its own, which can make some of Nie Li's actions seem more coldly calculative without the cultural framing that might paint him as a tragic hero. The plot itself is unchanged, but the silence around it is different.

People often ask about plot differences, but with a direct translation, there aren't any intentional ones. The deviation comes from the medium and the market. The English-localized manhua published on platforms like Tappytoon or Webcomics sometimes has adjusted dialogue to sound more natural to a Western webcomic audience, which can subtly shift character tone. A sarcastic remark might be punchier. A lengthy, flowery description of a technique might be shortened. So the emotional beats of the plot can land slightly differently. Also, the original novel has a very specific, repetitive structure of 'encounter enemy, reveal hidden knowledge, overpower enemy' that feels more obvious when you read it translated all at once. Some readers find that grating; others love the power fantasy rhythm. The plot is the same, but your tolerance for its tropes might change in English.

Lots of people point newcomers to Wuxiaworld for 'Tales of Demons and Gods'. That's where I started years ago, and it’s a solid choice—the translation is consistent and the site is reliable. But honestly, I drifted away from it after a few hundred chapters. The story kind of plateaus, and the translation pace felt glacial at times. I switched over to NovelUpdates, which isn’t a host itself but acts as a fantastic hub. Their page for the novel lists all the fan translation groups that picked it up over the years, with direct links. You can see which site has the most recent update at a glance.
Some of those aggregator sites that pop up in searches have terrible formatting and intrusive ads, but a few are surprisingly clean. I ended up reading a big chunk on one called LightNovelHeaven because their mobile page was less cluttered than others. It’s a bit of a gamble, though; you have to be ready to close a few pop-up windows. My advice is to use Wuxiaworld for the official feel, but don’t hesitate to follow the trail on NovelUpdates if you get impatient or want to see different translation styles for certain arcs.
