Lately I’ve been reading ‘The Quarry Girls’ and it’s become one of those books that I’m totally unsure whether it’s reality or fiction. Not directly based on real life but rooted in lots of historical/psychological truth that is really creepy and disturbing. It’s been woven together from loads of different urban legends, unsolved crimes and even unexplained events that have occurred in places all over the world but this author in particular seems to have used the particular example of small town, America to create this unexplainable, unreal feeling of something that could have happened.
Each of the girls are representations of many of the missing individuals that have been reported across the country. Their struggles with poverty, and their quest for an escape from their addiction are secondary to the lack of attention that they receive from authorities. Much like many of the missing person cases, theirs is a story of neglect and of extreme violence. Although the book does not reference any one specific true crime case, there are many accounts of the disappearances of young women across the country; Cleveland disappearances, and the Delphi murders being two examples. The way in which The Quarry Girls outlines the effects of trauma to a community and how it affects the characters in the book is excellent research, and their dialogue is so realistic it is almost unbearable at times. Unfortunately the portrayal of incompetence of the police throughout the story is also extremely realistic. However the true horror of this book is the way in which it outlines how in many cases of violence against women, they are dismissed until it is too late.
The supernatural parts of the book were completely made up by the author, but I think he did a great job of using the creepy things that happen in the tunnels and quarry to represent the things that we don’t want to see or hear about. The flaws in the town, the ways in which the town looks the other way at problems, etc. The ambiguity of the book is what makes it so powerful. I have no idea if the things that happen to the girls are supernatural or if they are the result of human actions. I think that is how a lot of real-life, true crimes feel. The Sodder children, for example, or the West Memphis Three. Their cases were never fully solved and left a lot of unanswered questions. 'The Quarry Girls' is similar in that it is not a retelling of a true crime, but it does leave the reader with a lot of unanswered questions.

Nope, this is a novel – a really gripping, atmospheric one. I think part of the confusion is that it is written in such a convincing, detailed style. In these times of true-crime boom and all the darker tales of events that occur everywhere, the expectation is that there must be corresponding Wikipedia pages to all of these stories. ‘The Quarry Girls’ is one of those stories that benefits from the existing expectation but is actually a work of fiction that taps into real cultural anxiety rather than drawing from a single ‘true’ story. The author did a lot of research into the waves of serial killers and missing persons cases from the time that this is set and weaved those into her own original story. So, to reiterate, no true events were the inspiration for this original work of terror, the terror is all manufactured, but all of the raw materials are drawn from real life.

This is a great question, and it gets to the heart of why I enjoyed this book so much. If it were simply another true-crime story, I would have read it and known how everything ended up in the end. But as it is a work of fiction inspired by some of the most real and heinous crimes ever committed, it can be suspenseful in a completely different way. And that is because anything can happen. The ‘based on true events’ label has become a genre in and of itself, and this book cleverly exists on the cusp of that. It uses the reader’s familiarity with said genre to ratchet up the tension and make them even more frightened. A constant question in the reader’s mind as to whether or not something actually happened in real life is the entire intent of the author. The answer, of course, is a resounding no for each individual event, but a firm yes to capturing the fundamental human fear of said events. A clever and effective literary technique to blurr the lines of reality and keep the reader on edge.

It’s an ‘original drama’ reimagined on a real historical stage, relying on true historical touchpoints for the setting (music, fashion, slang, politics) and development of story and characters. Then there are the fictional crimes, designed to propel the story along in the best possible way for the plot and for individual characters. These aren’t portrayed in an identical, messy and often unresolved format as they occurred historically. Instead, they have been constructed to create the best fiction out of what really happened. A hybrid in other words – the setting is 100% real, the props and backdrops are 100% real, but the play is 100% an ‘original drama’ by the author, exploring themes of friendship, complicity and survival above all.

It’s a completely fabricated story and I am so grateful that it is. If it were real then one could critique the number of coincidences that abounded and the perfect symmetry that several scenes enjoyed. However, as a work of fiction, one can simply enjoy the various creative choices that were made. The way in which several characters re-enter Vivian’s life at exactly the right moment was so satisfying a novelistic choice. The full-circle journey that she experienced was so moving in its own right. And it was all so beautifully structured. Every thread was tied up in the end in a deeply satisfying way.

A rather interesting debate this sparked at my book club – is ‘The Girl in Room 105’ fiction or nonfiction? Although the book doesn’t market itself as nonfiction, the way Bhagat has written the book feels so very real – casual for one, the way he has incorporated WhatsApp messages, the dry, skeptic tone of the protagonist. I think the author is making a very pertinent point – love gone wrong and a callous, apathetic world is so very easy to happen in real life.
This book is one of those rare stories that plants a seed of doubt and leaves it to fend for itself. It’s not a story with a happy end but a real-life like scenario and that’s what sticks with you.

It’s interesting to consider the massive cultural attachment to anchoring the most extreme of fiction in reality. It feels like people are unwilling to give the most horrifying stories the credit they deserve to be scary within their own context, and therefore need to be proven true in order to be fully feared. This does a great disservice to the horror genre, which is in practice a space for some of the most thoughtful and probing sociologists and psychologists writing today.
It’s interesting that you believe the best extreme fiction has to be anchored in reality. I believe that insisting something has to be ‘true’ in order to be scary enough is a failure of the imagination. The fact that a human mind is able to come up with something as dark and scary as so much of horror fiction and be able to form it into a story that will scare others is far more scary than the mere idea itself. In other words, the fact that something so dark and scary is able to be created by the human mind is in and of itself rather disturbing. So, no, I don’t believe that most of the truly scary extreme fiction is based on a true story. In fact, I think that most of it is purely the product of the human imagination and are original nightmares. They are meant to scare and to tap into our most primitive fears. Giving the stories that are terrifying to most people a ‘based on a true story’ tag is a way to creatively shift the blame for the nightmares that people read about in fiction to a place outside of the fiction itself, i.e. to real life.

The author of this novel is a wizard at the creation of historical fiction centered around completely fictional celebrities, in this case The Rivas. Other examples of this work by this author are The Closing of the American Heart and Daisy Jones and the Six.
While the Malibu of 1983 is real – complete with individual surfing contests, the pier, and tons of excess – the Rivas move through their world as if they are native to the place. And in many ways, they are. So while the answer to the question of whether or not a specific party in the book actually occurred is no, the question of whether similar events and parties and reactions to them occurred in that exact same time and place is absolutely yes. The truth of it all is embedded within the atmosphere that Reid so skillfully created and populated with her completely-made-up celebrities.

The movie is based on the true life experiences of Jim Carroll, author of ‘The Basketball Diaries’. His memoir is a raw, violent and squalid tale of street hustling and addiction. The movie is good but lacks the depth of the book which shows Carroll’s poetical background and how his story centers around his struggles with addiction rather than the basketball that was used as a plot device. I think that Leo DiCaprio is excellent as the young Carroll, but the real Jim was so much more than that, a street kid with a poet’s soul. I sometimes wonder how many other people experienced similar tales of woe and neglect.

The warden is making a manicure with rattlesnake venom. A juvenile detainee is claiming a treasure that's been lost for decades. All of this is a stylized narrative. The truth to the story is that there are times when you have to stand up for yourself. You have to dig. And that's not just a metaphor. You have to dig. Sometimes you have to dig a hole and then get back out of it. But in order to break this kind of cycle you have to make your own luck.
