Is The Basketball Diaries Based On A True Story?

The movie is based on the true life experiences of Jim Carroll, author of ‘The Basketball Diaries’. His memoir is a raw, violent and squalid tale of street hustling and addiction. The movie is good but lacks the depth of the book which shows Carroll’s poetical background and how his story centers around his struggles with addiction rather than the basketball that was used as a plot device. I think that Leo DiCaprio is excellent as the young Carroll, but the real Jim was so much more than that, a street kid with a poet’s soul. I sometimes wonder how many other people experienced similar tales of woe and neglect.

I can still get chills from ‘The Basketball Diaries’, one of those few truly raw and powerful films of the kind that can leave a deep scar on the viewer. The movie is totally real, adapted from Jim Carroll’s memoir of his teenage years in New York in the 1960s. Carroll, a talented young basketball player and poet, tells of his descent into heroin addiction and of his subsequent struggles with crime and with trying to survive on the streets of New York. If in the end the film doesn’t quite live up to the book, this is in part due to the talented performance of Leonardo DiCaprio, but above all to the dramatization of certain episodes. Yet the opposition between Carroll’s lyrical writing and the brutal, tough situations that he lived through is what is most striking about the book. Written as a memoir, the book is not written in a straight line. Instead, it is episodic and at times it reads like a series of fever dreams. In short, a powerfully written coming-of-age story in the fullest sense of the term – but, be warned, it is a heavy subject.

I read his poetry (ie: Fear of Dreaming) years after seeing the movie of Basketball Diaries, and loved it. He wrote like he spoke, unfiltered. The movie certainly took a few creative liberties (the trip he went on in the part of the movie where he is hallucinating being the biggest for me) but he managed to get the essence of his story across. What’s even more impressive about the man is that he somehow managed to kick the habit and go on to have a highly creative, successful adult life. The ending of the movie was a bit abrupt in my opinion. The book, though not perfect (ie: nothing is) was more developed and had a more satisfying conclusion. I suppose though that the ending of the movie is meant to reflect real life: that recovery from addiction is rarely neat or tidy.
