It feels like people are unwilling to give the most horrifying stories the credit they deserve to be scary within their own context, and therefore need to be proven true in order to be fully feared. This does a great disservice to the horror genre, which is in practice a space for some of the most thoughtful and probing sociologists and psychologists writing today. It’s interesting that you believe the best extreme fiction has to be anchored in reality. I believe that insisting something has to be ‘true’ in order to be scary enough is a failure of the imagination. The fact that a human mind is able to come up with something as dark and scary as so much of horror fiction and be able to form it into a story that will scare others is far more scary than the mere idea itself. In other words, the fact that something so dark and scary is able to be created by the human mind is in and of itself rather disturbing. So, no, I don’t believe that most of the truly scary extreme fiction is based on a true story. In fact, I think that most of it is purely the product of the human imagination and are original nightmares. They are meant to scare and to tap into our most primitive fears. Giving the stories that are terrifying to most people a ‘based on a true story’ tag is a way to creatively shift the blame for the nightmares that people read about in fiction to a place outside of the fiction itself, i.e. to real life.

I would imagine both of these novels do a good job of sticking the landing for their respective core tropes (sufficient and satisfying 'Grovel' for Dangerous Deal, and a great 'First Love' confession for Girl Next Door). Based on reviews and chatter throughout the community, I gather that they do in fact deliver satisfactory endings for readers seeking specific tropes, which is probably why each are frequently recommended within their respective tropes. A failed ending would be a failure to deliver on the tropes that were promised.

I do not remember any specific scenes or even chapters from the book, but I am reminded of a certain feeling or mood that it evoked. The feeling was one of emptiness but it was good. It was like the feeling that one gets after eating a large meal and then sitting around feeling full and satisfied. I do not remember closing the book and lying on my back staring at the ceiling for what seemed like hours, but that is probably what I did. A good ending to a book is often not about the plot but about the mood that it evokes and how long that mood lasts with the reader. Perhaps I should read it again. One of the key areas to bring to life is the comedy and warmth of the situations, particularly in domestic scenes. As a premise the story is very dark but a lot of web novels manage to tackle serious subject matter with a balance of tone and a large portion of humor and heart in the raw. Scenes where the Protagonist is struggling to hide a minor magical injury and coming up with excuses, or going shopping with the Girl for groceries while secretly fearing he’s being followed by a Shadow Beast are likely to be contrasted against the horror scenes to make them even scarier, and the quiet moments between them more precious. The Girl’s normalcy and the difference it makes to the Protagonist is also likely to be a source of a lot of relief and comedy, and her being utterly unphased by situations that the Protagonist is on edge about, or her hilarious misinterpretation of magical events are likely to bring a lot of levity to the situations. This aspect of the story captures the author’s natural comedic timing and would be hard to translate well.

At the heart of The Good House are two main characters: Alistair 'The Dealmaker' Vance, all glittering surface and hidden depth, and Louise Bell, solid earth and quiet fire. Their dialogue is a treat: half business, half flirtation, half interesting conversation. The brother, Marcus, is a voice of reason and caution to Louise and also to the reader, reminding us of the many dangers that she is taking. The silent but most observant Silas is the institutional memory of the household and is often called upon to bring Alistair back to reality. These are characters who have lived long and fully before this story began. They have histories, quirks, relationships with each other that extend far beyond this single narrative. One gets the impression that they would continue to live their lives long and fully even if this story were to come to an end.

This is a little unusual but I’ve come up with a way to look at two shows. “Dangerous Deal” is one of those shows that is better to watch with friends while eating snacks and yelling at characters who make really poor business decisions. It’s also good to watch with friends who are equally annoyed with the music which is ridiculously over-the-top. On the other hand, “Girl Next Door” is a solo viewing experience. I wouldn’t put this on to watch with friends as I think they would get bored quickly and pull out their phones. This show is best viewed when you are in the mood for something to absorb personally, rather than to dissect socially. And in terms of practical application, that is a huge difference between the two shows.

This is really interesting. I had the misunderstanding that the translation wouldn’t update if the raw was incomplete, but this thread is showing me that the two processes are totally disconnected sometimes and that can happen.

I've been avoiding the middle of this book, but I finally gave in and read the end. It was on a tropical beach where the two were laughing together. He kept calling her "Mrs. CEO" and then she splashed him in the water. The end of the book. I'll assume they managed to land the deal and then proceeded to become millionaires and retired early. Not a bad life. After hundreds of chapters of angst, it would be nice to see the two happy and carefree. As for the details of how they got there, I really didn't care. The last chapter was so cute and fluffy, it was the perfect way to clear my mind after finishing that long book.
