A lot of them use a 'found footage' approach in prose. Diaries, transcripts, case files, letters that end mid-sentence. The suspense is baked into the format itself—you know from the structure that something went terribly wrong, and you're piecing together the disaster in retrospect. The horror is in the gaps between the entries, in what must have happened during the missing time.

It creates a dreadful inevitability. You're not wondering if something bad happens, you're reading to discover the awful how.

The power of a single, perfectly chosen verb. Not 'the door opened,' but 'the door grated open.' Not 'she looked,' but 'her eyes swiveled.' These verbs do double duty: they describe the action and imbue it with a specific, often unsettling, quality. They build suspense through implication and tone in a single word.

It's micro-level suspense. Every sentence becomes a tiny engine of dread, propelling you toward the inevitable.

The concept of 'contagion'—that the horror isn't just an event, but a spreading condition. It could be an idea, a memory, a visual pattern, or a sound. The suspense comes from watching it jump from person to object to place, threatening to breach containment. The stakes escalate geometrically as the 'infection' spreads.

It creates a domino-effect of dread. The fear isn't static; it's actively growing, and the story is a race against its exponential progress.

A structural trick: the 'slow zoom.' Start with a wide, almost detached observation of a strange phenomenon in a town or a place. Then, over a few paragraphs, zoom in relentlessly to one house, one room, one person, until the horror is breathing down your neck. The suspense is in that inevitable, narrowing focus. There's a dreadful momentum to it, like being in a car sliding on ice toward a cliff.

You see the destination, and the narrative force pulling you there feels unstoppable.

How do the best horror short stories build tension in few pages?

Man, this thread is making me want to go re-read all of Stephen King's short story collections. 'The Boogeyman' from 'Night Shift' is a clinic in this. It's just a guy in a therapy session talking. That's it. And the tension becomes almost unbearable through nothing but dialogue and the gradual erosion of the listener's (and reader's) skepticism. The setting is so boring it becomes terrifying.
