It's often about what isn't questioned. A character accepts a situation with little surprise. The reader, adopting the character's perspective, also accepts it. But the situation itself is the clue. Why was the back door unlocked at 3 AM? The character thinks, 'Huh, that's weird,' and moves on. Because they move on, we move on. The clue is the unanswered question that we, following the character's lead, choose not to pursue. The author hides it in our passivity.

Misdirection through action. A character performs a suspicious act—sneaking out at night—which the narrative and other characters fixate on. Meanwhile, in the background of that scene, another character does something utterly mundane, like forgetting an umbrella. The sneaking is the red herring; the forgotten umbrella is the clue, lost in the glare of the more dramatic event. The author directs your gaze, and the clue sits patiently in your peripheral vision, noted but not examined.

Second-guessing the reader. The author presents a clue that seems too obvious—a bloody glove. So obvious that the reader thinks, 'That can't be it, the author wouldn't be that clumsy.' So you look for a deeper, more clever clue. But sometimes, the bloody glove is exactly it. The clue is hidden in plain sight by being blatantly, daringly obvious, betting that the reader's sophistication will lead them to overthink and reject it. The hiding place is the reader's own cleverness.

I'm just sitting here reading these responses and realizing how many mysteries I've read where I must have missed a ton of this craft. Makes me want to go re-read everything with a notepad.

I've always been fascinated by clues hidden in parallel structure. Two seemingly unrelated events are described with eerily similar language or imagery. On first read, it feels like stylistic flair or thematic resonance. On second read, you see it's the author quietly linking cause and effect, showing you the pattern of the crime through poetic repetition.

The unreliable sense. A character hears a sound described as 'like a door slamming.' It actually was a gunshot. Their brain, not expecting a gunshot, interprets it through a familiar lens. The clue is the description of the sound, not the sound itself. The author hides the truth inside the character's subjective sensory experience. The reader has to distrust the narration of events and consider alternative interpretations for sensory data. It's fair because we all do this in real life—mishear things based on context. The mystery replicates that fallibility.
