What Are Top Nhentia (Mature Anime) Titles For Beginners?

Late-night curiosity led me down a rabbit hole of adult anime with much nuance instead of shock for the typical viewer. A good place to start with the adult oriented anime would be ‘Futari Ecchi’, ‘Nana to Kaoru’, and ‘Nozoki Ana’. Futari Ecchi takes a rather educational and realistic approach to making love, with Nana to Kaoru having a very good look at negotiated kink and plenty of character development in the process. Nozoki Ana is a peep show, but it’s got plenty of plot to go around as well. In each of these series the characters are treated as people first, sex second.

More importantly, I look for a few things outside of anime titles themselves: tone and consent. Is there a realistic portrayal of adults making choices with consequences? Or is it a poorly written piece with lots of non-consent or (shudders) incest? Needless to say, those types of works don’t stand up to too much scrutiny once one begins to consider the humanity of the characters in them. Note, too, that the way you access anime (as well as many other types of adult content) is often legal. Look for officially released titles (as OVAs, for example) and check for licensing on DVDs and streamable content. Translations, in particular, are often much better, and there are usually excellent content notes as well. My mature anime list is surprisingly emotional in many cases, just as with any good romance. It’s humanizing in a way that’s rather unexpected, which is why I continue to read it.

As a matter of personal preference, when people are looking for something more narrative-focused and adult-oriented, rather than simply being hardcore, I direct them to the more story-driven mature-content titles rather. And of those, I think a good place to start would be with the married-couple-focused, gentle, extremely-consensual ‘Futari Ecchi’ – largely instructional in nature as it charts the husband and wife’s explorations of each other, and their relationship.

I think also for a softer entry into kink Nana to Kaoru is good as it actually has some very nice kink scenes and is looked at from an emotional standpoint rather than just having scenes thrown at you. The couple involved are adults and actually do negotiate what they are doing to each other’s satisfaction. Nozoki Ana is good for a darker voyeuristic view without any brutal scenes.

For borderline ecchi, or for really mature drama without a ton of sex, look into Golden Boy or Kuzu no Honkai. My one rule of thumb for this sort of thing is to start with stories with lots of plot, or with well-developed characters, and then “graduate” to truly raw stuff as appropriate. It’s amazes me how much a story can do for the experience.

Start with something short and sweet, like the beautiful and marital ‘Futari Ecchi’ and the intensely kinky but responsibly portrayed ‘Nana to Kaoru’. Another option for heavily dramatic storylines with little to no sex is the intense ‘Kuzu no Honkai’. The classic and ridiculously lighthearted ‘H’ (‘Golden Boy’) is another fun short read.

Look for adult characters, consent, and a reason for their sex within the narrative. Thus you avoid adult-content-on-shock only and can actually have fun with the various titles that combine the sexually-charged with heart.
