I actually disagree with always starting at the very beginning. The 'Blood of Elves' novel is where the continuous saga kicks off, and the 'Fox Children' graphic novel from Dark Horse adapts a section of that. It throws you right into the political tension and Ciri's training at Kaer Morhen. It's less episodic, more plot-driven. If a new reader is coming from the games or show and already has a basic grip on the world, starting here with a more serialized, urgent narrative might hook them faster than the slower, fable-like pace of 'The Last Wish'. The downside is you miss some crucial Geralt-Ciri bonding from 'Sword of Destiny', but you can always loop back.

It depends on what the new reader is looking for. If they want pure, monster-hunting Witcher vibes, the graphic novel 'The Last Wish' adaptation from Dark Horse or the original book of short stories is the way to go. If they're more interested in the political drama and the larger saga surrounding Ciri, they could start with the 'Blood of Elves' novel and its related comic adaptations. Personally, I found the 'Curse of Crows' storyline in the comics to be a fantastic, standalone entry that captures the grim fairy-tale essence perfectly without requiring deep lore knowledge. The art in that one is particularly moody and effective. Just avoid the 'Fading Memories' collection as a starting point—it's a bit all over the place and references events from later books.

New reader? Stick to the source material order. 'The Last Wish', then 'Sword of Destiny'. The Dark Horse comics that adapt these, like 'House of Glass' or 'Fox Children', are fine supplements, but they're side stories or adaptations of parts of the novels. The core mythology and character foundations are in Sapkowski's original short stories. The graphic novels are great for atmosphere and action, but they sometimes assume you know who people are. Read the first two books, then use the comics as a bonus for when you want more Witcher content in a different format. The library binding for 'The Last Wish' is usually easy to find.

First impressions really matter, so I wouldn't start with 'Season of Storms' even though it's a prequel—it's kind of a mess and leans too heavily on you already caring about Geralt. The whole thing with the amnesia in the main books makes it tricky to jump in mid-stream too.
My top pick is 'The Last Wish'. It's a collection of short stories, so you get these self-contained adventures that introduce the world, the monsters, the moral gray areas, and all the important characters like Yennefer and Dandelion. The 'Something More' story at the end is the perfect bridge to the main saga. After that, 'Sword of Destiny' continues the short-story format and directly sets up Ciri's arrival. The graphic novels that adapt these early stories, like the ones from Dark Horse, are a solid visual entry point before you commit to the full novel series. The art varies, but seeing Geralt in action can really cement the tone.

Honestly, for a visual start, the 'Witcher Omnibus' from Dark Horse collecting the early comics is a safe bet. It includes 'House of Glass' and 'Fox Children', which are solid, original stories supervised by Sapkowski. They feel like new episodes of the early short stories, with Geralt taking on weird contracts. The art is consistent and sets the right dark fantasy tone. It's less daunting than a full novel and gives you a true taste of the profession. After that, if you like the world, go back to the 'The Last Wish' book for the foundational legends.

I can.
I killed my wolf before I even had a chance to shift for the first time, let alone meet my fated mate.
To get her back, I'll do anything, including the one thing that's forbidden to werewolves. I'm not proud of it, but my pack doesn't need to know.
