I see a lot of fics mistake ‘complex’ for ‘tragic backstory times ten.’ It’s not. Gale already has the Karsite Weave tragedy; making it worse just numbs the reader. Complexity is in the quiet moments. How does Lae’zel, raised for war, learn to rest? Does she find it infuriatingly dull, or does she discover a terrifying peace in mending armor or watching clouds? That shift from a purely instrumental view of life to valuing experience for its own sake is profound development. Tie it to the party dynamics—maybe she observes Karlach’s joy in simple things and is first contemptuous, then curiously jealous. Let the change be slow, resisted, and maybe never fully complete.
Read the in-game books and notes. Seriously. The marginalia on Githyanki creche reports or the scribbles in Sharran texts give you the cultural grammar your characters think in. When writing Gale, sprinkle in his academic references naturally, not as infodumps. Have him compare a magical anomaly to an obscure Netherese theorem mid-argument. That texture does half the developmental work by grounding his voice. Then just... let them be wrong sometimes. A perfectly rationalizing Gale can be brilliantly, frustratingly wrong about people.
Honestly? Play their origin. Not just your Tav run, but actually start a game as Astarion or Karlach and sit through all their private narration. You’ll pick up on tiny vocal tics and reactive thoughts the game doesn’t show when they’re companions. It gives you a backbone for their internal monologue that feels authentic. Then throw them into a situation that forces a core belief to clash with a new need—maybe Shadowheart has to rely on sheer luck instead of Shar’s calculated plans, and it terrifies her. That friction writes the development for you.
Lae'zel refusing the authority of Vlaakith even before Orpheus gets involved opens so many possibilities. Complex development in BG3 often means working with the game's huge canvas—characters already carry rich trauma, ambition, and moral greyness. Shadowheart's journey is practically built for fanfiction; her memory loss isn't just a plot device, it’ s a chance to explore what a person chooses to become when their past is erased and then handed back. I’d argue the key is letting them react to events the game didn’t fully show. How does Astarion’s newfound freedom truly settle after Cazador? Does he become crueler out of fear, or clumsily kind? The complexity comes from sitting with the contradictions.
One thing I’ve tried is isolating a character post-canon and building a small, mundane challenge around them. Wyll managing the Gate without his father’s guidance, for instance. The development feels earned when it’s a series of small, flawed choices, not one grand revelation. Also, don’t be afraid to let them backslide. A character like Gale, so sure of his intellect, might promise to reject godhood only to secretly crave that power again during a moment of vulnerability. That internal tug-of-war is where the good stuff lives.

A/N
This was my First Trilogy and might have some Grammar issues. I will re-edit when I can.
The absolute flood of 'what if' scenarios based on those Origin character choices hooks me. My partner and I played co-op, he played Dark Urge, I went Gale, and the sheer divergence from our campaign to, say, a fic where Dark Urge resists but Gale has the Orb crisis? That specific 'road not taken' vibe is everywhere. It's not just retelling the game.
Plus, the game's own 'canon' is so fluid—who lives, who dies, which god a cleric serves—that fanworks feel like legitimate explorations of alternate realities. I've seen a wildly popular series treating Karlach's engine fix as a multi-chapter engineering puzzle with Dammon, full of infernal mechanics jargon. You wouldn't get that granular 'fix-it' obsession in a fandom with a more static ending.
It's the gaps, really. The game gives you so much, but then you finish and go 'wait, but what did Wyll's dad actually say back in Baldur's Gate after everything?' and someone's already written 80k about it.
I actually think romance-focused fics work better when they don't just rehash the in-game romances. What I've been really into lately are fics that treat the whole party as a dysfunctional family and let romance bloom from there. Like, a slow-burn fic about Wyll and Karlach trying to understand each other's predicaments, where the romance is almost incidental to the support they offer. It feels more real than the high-drama moments the game provides.
A few months ago I stumbled on this Astarion-centric fic that had him meeting a reincarnated Cazador's victim in a later century, and the whole thing was this weird, tense dance between healing and revenge. It wasn't a traditional romance at all, more of a psychological horror with moments of tenderness that hit harder because they were so unexpected. The best plots for me are the ones the game couldn't or wouldn't do.
One thing I've noticed is how much Astarion's past gets fleshed out. Canon gives you hints, but the fanfics really dig into the two hundred years of torment. I read this one where it wasn't just Cazador being evil—it explored how the constant performance of seduction eroded his sense of self, to the point where he wasn't sure what desires were actually his anymore after he was turned. That felt more insightful than just 'vampire sad.'
Lae'zel is another big one. The game shows her devotion to Vlaakith, but I've seen stories that imagine her childhood in Crèche K'liir. One had her being assigned a wounded comrade to practice healing spells on, and failing repeatedly, which forged this brutal practicality early on. It makes her later crisis of faith hit harder when you imagine the sheer weight of that indoctrination, built one small, harsh lesson at a time.
Gale's backstory with Mystra gets a lot of attention, obviously. But the interesting trend isn't just retelling the hubris; it's the quieter fics about his life after the orb, holed up in his tower. The attempts at normalcy, like trying to cook a meal without magic and burning it, or talking to his tressym when the loneliness got unbearable. They build out the man beneath the 'Chosen' title in ways the game's big moments don't always have time for.
