The single biggest mistake I see is treating the hypnosis like an on/off switch. For suspense, that switch has to flicker. Establish a small, early tell—maybe they repeat a phrase unconsciously, or their handwriting shifts slightly when they write a certain name. Let the POV character (or reader) notice it before the hypnosed character does. That gap between what we know and what they know is pure tension. Then, escalate the stakes through lost time. A missing hour is scarier than a missing day because the uncertainty is tighter, more personal. I lean into sensory deprivation in those 'missing' moments; describing the return to awareness through a dry mouth, a chill, an object out of place works better than detailing the trance itself.

Dialogue from the hypnotist needs subtext, never outright commands until the very end. Have them ask leading questions that sound innocent, or give compliments that double as triggers. The horror isn't in the command 'stand still,' it's in the character realizing they want to stand still, and they don't know why. Finally, break a rule late in the story. If you've established the hypnosis only works with eye contact, have it happen over a phone call. That moment of 'oh, the rules are gone' shatters any remaining safety for the reader.

Ambiguity. Never let the reader be 100% sure what's real and what's suggested. Mix the hypnotist's commands with the character's genuine desires so the line blurs. Is she following orders, or is she just finally doing what she secretly wanted? That question, left hanging, creates a lingering unease that lasts well past the last line. Use the environment to mirror the mental state—flickering lights, repetitive sounds, mirrors—but subtly, so it feels like atmosphere, not a checklist.

Honestly, a lot of hypnosis fic feels like wish-fulfillment, which kills suspense for me. To make it unsettling, focus on the cost. What is the hypnotized person losing? Not just free will, but a memory, a mannerism, a relationship. Show that erosion. Maybe they forget how to make their favorite coffee, or they flinch when their best friend touches them. Small, specific losses build dread more than grand declarations of control.

Also, write from the perspective of the person under influence if you can. The confusion, the rationalization, the slow dawning that their thoughts aren't their own—that's where the real chill is. Let them fight back in tiny, futile ways, like scribbling a note they can't read later.
