I read a 'Harry Potter' one where Hermione, under an imperious-like curse, had to rely on her subconscious problem-solving and sheer stubbornness to send coded messages. Her arc was about intellectual arrogance—she always believed her conscious mind was her greatest weapon, but she had to learn a different kind of strength. The best hypnotism arcs make the character fundamentally change or confront a core flaw because of the experience, not just revert to normal once the spell is broken.

Honestly, a lot of it lands in a gray area that makes some readers deeply uncomfortable, and rightly so. The tag is often a minefield because the line between exploring a dark theme and glorifying it can get real thin. But when it's done with intention, it can be a powerful way to dissect power dynamics in a relationship, even outside of a supernatural or sci-fi setting. The most chilling ones I've read are the slow-burn domestic scenarios where the hypnosis is subtle, changing preferences and opinions bit by bit until the person is a puppet who thinks they're pulling their own strings. That stuff stays with you.
