The Feast of the Luna

"I am not your provider. I am your teacher. You have three hours until we clear the courtyard. In that time, you will learn the Basic Knit—the stitch of existence. If you can complete a collar, you can keep the warmth you generate. If you can’t, you’ll have to rely on the heat of your own pack."
Silas and Kaelen moved among the crowds. They weren't handing out bread; they were handing out instructions. It was a bizarre, desperate scene: hardened warriors, who only days ago were trying to vibrate the Ridge into dust, were now staring at wooden sticks and tangled lanolin with the intensity of scholars.
"Purl over, knit through," Kaelen’s voice rose above the murmuring. "Don't tighten the tension too much, or the spirit can't breathe. Too loose, and the winter gets in. Find the middle, brother. Find the rhythm of your own heart."
