Familial Bond Mafia Short Stories & Devotion Novels

It’s been five years since my mother married into the Sterling crime family, and my relationship with my stepbrother, Louis, is still ice-cold. He’s arrogant, aloof, and wouldn’t give me the time of day. I know better than to even try. Until I saw it: a birthmark on Louis’s body, identical to the one on my online boyfriend, Rowan. I thought about the messages Rowan had sent me every night for the past two years, the ones that made my face flush and my heart race: Baby, I can only fall asleep thinking of you. I need to see you. I’ll show you how much I want you. I’m going crazy thinking about you… I just couldn’t square the man in those messages with the cold-as-ice Louis. To make matters worse, I had just lied to Rowan, telling him I’d failed to get into Harvard and wasn't good enough for him, before breaking up with him. If he finds out it was me who dumped him, I’m pretty sure he’ll tear me to pieces. I was already packing my bags, ready to bolt. But then Louis appeared, blocking my path. He leaned in, his low laugh a menacing rumble in my ear. "Think you can play me and just walk away? Who gave you the balls?"

During a game of truth or dare on our family camping trip, my sister Clara chose a dare without hesitation. Our parents immediately praised her for being brave. "Clara's never been afraid of anything, not since she was little. She's our pride and joy." She drew a card, read what was written on it, then looked straight at me with a faint smirk. "The dare says Emma has to call her fiancé right now, break off their engagement, and tell him to date me instead." The campfire crackled. My grip tightened around my phone. Liam Sterling was the man I'd loved for years. But my mother, Helen, walked over and patted me impatiently on the back. "It's just a game. Why are you getting so worked up? Go on, call him. Don't make everyone think you're a sore loser." My father, Richard, cut in coldly. "Can't you be a little more generous? Liam isn't your property. Clara just wants a chance to get to know him. What's wrong with playing along?" Clara pushed the phone toward me, smiling innocently. "Emma, are you scared of a little game?" I said nothing. My eyes dropped to the new message on my screen. "My yacht's waiting for you at the dock." It was from Liam. I was done playing this game. And this time, I wasn't handing over what was mine.

At the coming-of-age tarot reading, my little sister drew the Empress. I drew the Hanged Man, the Sacrifice card, just like always. Mom and Dad raised their glasses of red wine, beaming. "Looks like even God knows your sister was born to be a Donna." Under the Lombardi family code, the Empress could claim one prize from the Sacrifice. My sister eyed the obsidian cross around my neck and suddenly smiled. "Helena, I want your engagement to the Ravelli family." The banquet hall went quiet. The old Don had arranged that engagement for me before he died. All these years, it was the only thing of mine my sister hadn't taken. Without thinking, I pressed a hand to my chest. But my mother immediately jammed the muzzle of her gun against my shoulder. "That brutal Don has never even met you. What's the harm in switching?" My father yanked the cross off my neck and pushed it across to my sister. "The Sacrifice exists to give everything for the Empress. "That's how you've lived since you were a kid. Don't break the family code now." My sister put on the cross and winked at me. "You're not having second thoughts, are you?" I thought back to my childhood. She'd wanted my sidearm. She'd wanted my armored car. She'd even wanted my safe house. Every time, my parents said she deserved the best, and all I had to do was give it to her. I slowly looked down at the unread message on my phone. "In three days, a helicopter will be waiting for you on the roof." The sender: Don Ravelli. This time, I wasn't giving anything up. I was going to be the Donna who made the rules.

From my earliest memories, my entire family is cold and distant toward me. When my parents look at my younger sister, Claire Lloyd, their eyes fill with warmth and joy. Yet, when they turn to me, only disgust remains. Claire's life is filled with applause and excessive love, while mine is filled with disdain and suffering. When the explosion erupts at the street corner, I save the stranger beside me. Later, I learn he is Byron Whitmore, a mafia family's Don. He begins pursuing me after I rescue him. Later, I quit my job and move to a new place, but he finds me and proposes in 100 different ways. "Why me?" I ask countless times. "Because it's you," he always answers. The wedding causes a sensation throughout the city. I truly seem to have transformed from an ugly duckling into a swan. That is, until I'm five months pregnant, when Claire needs a transfusion of rare Rh-negative blood after a car accident. The blood bank has a shortage. Because of that, my parents knock me unconscious and send me to the hospital. In my daze, the blood extraction machine hums continuously. As two thousand milliliters of blood leave my body, I see Byron. Tears well up in my eyes. I begin thinking he's here to save me. Instead, I hear him say, "We can't take any more. Sharon and the baby will die." "But Claire has lost too much blood. She'll die, too..." My mother pleads. "No one wants Claire safe more than I do." Byron's voice is thick with pain. "She's my first love. I've never forgotten her. I only married Sharon because her face looks so much like Claire's. "But I can't trade her life for Claire's. Trust me—I'll find another way." So, that's his reason for marrying me. The blood extraction machine continues running, but my heart has already stopped beating. The affection I see in his eyes has never been for me. He's always looking through me at someone else. Everyone in the world loves Claire, and Byron is not the exception that I foolishly believe him to be. That grand wedding is nothing but an ugly duckling's self-deceiving fantasy.
