Everything she'd read so far in the book came rushing back to her on a tidal wave of excitement. I pulled it out and flipped it open in the middle. There was a drawing of a yeti-looking creature called a yowg. The description gave details of height, size and hair colour. Dietary information and habitats were also included. I flicked through more pages and found more creatures, some of which I was familiar with. The names, at least. Unfortunately, the book wasn’t organised into alphabetical order, so I had to search a number of pages before I found what I was looking for: Mouse King.

Some passages detailed how they lived, others spoke about their traditions, while several pages carefully documented gifts and abilities unlike anything I had ever encountered before. I turned each page more quickly than the last. This was exactly what I had been searching for. Every answer only pulled me deeper into the book until the rest of the study disappeared around me. A version of Red Riding Hood with the wolf as both sinner and seducer and the woodsman as the hero who saves the girl and takes her away from her old life to a new, better one. Seeing the book, touching it made her mother feel closer than she had in years. Even if it turned out to be just a copy, it was worth whatever she had paid.
