Alpha Zaine’s Rejection
Beth looks away, changing her mind about whatever it is the was going to say.
I have been aware of Addy’s eyes and ears being on us throughout our brief exchange. She is older than when I left, of course. Her face is lined, just like mine. Her hair is whiter, her eyes lost their shine, but she still has that magic about her that drew me in all those years ago.
I cannot imagine what the two, or three, of them have endured in my absence. It is not the child’s fault that she was born into this mess. She is part of my Addy, my daughter’s sister, which makes her mine too.
