Nurses murmured orders. “One more,” the doctor urged, “one more, Valeria. You’re almost there. I can see the head.” She let out a sound that didn’t even sound human and bore down with everything she had left. I saw the doctor’s hands move, a slick flash of dark hair, and then... A cry. The world stopped. Valeria fell back against the bed, sobbing and laughing all at once. The doctor lifted this tiny, red, furious creature and placed him on her chest.

She hurried to his side and kissed his forehead, "Go back inside. Get nanny Claire to play with you. I'll see you soon." Valerie drove as fast as she could, and in less than thirty minutes, she was already parked in the hospital parking lot. She went in through the third wing, which was closer to the Doctor's office and away from too many questioning eyes.
