When love turns to ashes
He knocked once on the door and stepped inside.
The doctor, a middle-aged man with glasses perched at the tip of his nose, looked up from some charts.
“Mr. Xander ?” he asked cautiously.
“Yes,” Xander replied, his voice thick. “I’m Valerie’s father.”
The doctor blinked, surprised. He stood up and stretched out his hand.
“Valerie has spoken highly of you… she was excited that you came back into her life. Please, have a seat.”
Xander sat down, wringing his hands together. He leaned forward, the weight of his words almost crushing him.
