What is happening? Cautiously, I look behind me and stifle the urge to gasp when I see a toad, way more extensive than my minivan. Its pitch-black eyes are focused on a dove, and I witness the frog catch it with its thick, sticky tongue—the bird flap its wings, but it's useless. The toad is stronger and swallows the winged creature with ease. "Ribbit!" The frog looks very self-satisfied. What. The. Actual. Fuck.

In the end, I think they turned out great. Not that I knew what the others were for but there was also a frog on a log, a humming bird and a fat Cardinal. The very last one I was drawing was for Arlo. He got those picture for us, or more for me. It was of a wolf. It’s head was downward with his teeth showing. The hair was standing straight up with a human skull under it’s paw. There wasn’t any flesh on it, just the bones. Originally, I was going to make it a dead rabbit or something but this seemed appropriate. Keeping this one black and white, kept some of the mystery alive. “Charlotte??” Waylon yelled as he was coming in.

You need to study the movement of every single thing in the pond to get your answer.” Angela saw it as a waste of time but she didn’t have any better thing to use her time for, so she went for it. She looked at the pond taking her time to do what Leila instructed her to. A frog was hopping towards a water lily. When it was about to get there a big black frog—way bigger than it—pushed it out of the way and it fell into the pond. The frog tried its best to save itself and get back to the water lily but the big bad black frog kept pulling the good frog deeper and deeper into the water.

Kade and I held our breath. Then, she grinned and held up her hands, showing off the frog she’d caught. Kade’s laugh rumbled against my chest as the frog hopped out of her hands, on top of her head, and back into the fountain with a splash. I laughed, too.

The farmhouse was warm. I sat by the fire. Lily was on my lap. Barnaby was tucked under her arm. She was drawing on a piece of paper with crayons. Red. Blue. Yellow. Green. Her small tongue poked out in concentration. She was so focused. So present. Rex walked to me. Sat beside me. His hand found my knee. "What is she drawing?" I looked at the paper. A house. A garden. Some of the students began to bite their fingers in frenzy, trying again and again but nobody could resurrect their frog. Is it that hard? I wonder why nobody has succeeded yet. Perhaps, I should start mine now and see if it works. I shut my eyes for a second to activate my wolf. My fangs sprang out, claws growing longer, my eyes flashing blue. I was in a state of semi-wolf form. I bit my thumb and placed it on the chest of the frog, silently reciting the ‘spell of life’. Just before I was done, I could feel the heartbeat of the frog and I opened my eyes. The frog was alive and it let out a loud croak.
