At most large high schools, it was the same way.
A dark-skinned, very muscular man, just shy of six feet in height, stood at the center of the court, waiting for the last few stragglers. “Gather round,” the man boomed in a deep voice. “Starting today, we’ll be playing volleyball. Before we get into the fundamentals, I want to see where y’all are at. There are three courts. Six teams of five! Go!”
Everyone split up into teams of friends. In less than a minute, there was only one team left to join: Eliza and Svet’s. James walked over sheepishly. Eliza eyed his chest. “Isn’t gold a little ostentatious for you, Mr. T?”
