Dawn, however, skipped ahead without hesitation. The moment she reached Elena, she pulled something from behind her back.
“A flower,” she said, offering a tiny purple bloom.
Elena knelt to accept it, swallowing the lump in her throat. “Thank you, sweetheart. It’s beautiful.”
