Heir. The word sat in the air like a weight only a few of us were pretending not to see. Gordon had named him on the Den wall like a man handing off fire. Not with a trumpet. With a bow of his head. Heir Korrin. The King. The one that wasn’t supposed to exist. I hated that it changed the calculus in my gut. I hated that it was true. Ellan sipped his coffee. “Go look, Adrian. Don’t hover. Don’t posture. If anyone points a camera, you stand in front of it until they remember their job is not to feed rumors.”

He just watched me, steady as always. I dragged a hand down my face, trying to shove the rage back down my throat. “Remind me the exact wording of the alliance with the vampires.” He didn’t even blink. She asked herself and walked back in the direction of her room. Astra was sprawled on her bed smiling hopelessly. "Are you well?" she asked and Astra simply chuckled. "I've never been better!! I've been invited for Queenstrial!" she shouted gleefully and Summer rolled her eyes. Of course, she forgot that it was that time of the season. The time the Crown Prince got married. They would be put through a series of tests to determine whether or not they were fit to be Queen.
