I sent a mindlink to Bradley and the triplets, asking if it was okay I divulged some of our secrets in order to help her understand that I didn’t WANT to reject her, that I felt the NEED to reject her so she could have someone who would only think of her first. With their approval, I asked “Cailee, have you heard of the Knights League?” seeing her eyes widen with shock and recognition. “I am a Guardian Knight; I vowed to protect Ellie with my life no matter what. I can’t fully be your mate and do that at the same time,” I said sadly, hating to hear the words coming out of my mouth as if they somehow made the hurt more real.

Kaelan demanded, reaching us both, his gaze moving rapidly between my bare, frozen feet and the crack still pulsing faint and patient in the ancient wall behind us. "The Hollow reached her again," Rhys said before I could find the words myself, his voice carefully even despite the exhaustion I could hear underneath it. "In her sleep. It's been asking her to accept its offer for weeks. Tonight, exhaustion nearly answered for her, before she managed to stop herself just short of the ward line." Fear. Fury. If you were hoping for a tragic backstory, I hate to disappoint.” “That’s the whole story,” he repeats, flat. Like he’s tasting something rotten.

Like something that has been waiting so long it forgot what waiting was even for anymore.” The word settled uneasily in my chest, because it did not match anything Ysolde’s fragments had warned us to expect, and dread crept slowly through me at the thought that perhaps we had been wrong about what we were truly guarding against, that an entire century of fear might have been aimed at the wrong target. I caught Rhen’s eye across the small gathered group, and I could see the same thought forming behind her own worried expression. “If it is lonely rather than hungry,” I said, “then whatever this Hollow actually is, it may not be the enemy Ysolde’s fragment assumed.”
