The reviews began arriving on Thursday. Patricia Osei had told me to read them but not to organize my understanding of the book around them because the book had been written for the women in the long middle and the women in the long middle were not the reviewers. The reviewers were the first room the book passed through on its way to the people it was for. The first review I read was from a literary publication that described the book as unflinching and specific and written with the particular authority of someone who had lived inside the thing she was describing rather than observing it from outside.

He'd been staying more nights than not for the past week, the couch becoming a formality we both observed less and less. He came to the counter and looked at my laptop. "You didn't open it." "I said I wouldn't." "Open it." "You read it. Like last time." "Last time you hadn't submitted to a top-tier journal with a personal introduction from Reeves." He pulled the laptop toward him. "This one we read together." He turned it so we could both see the screen, and I moved beside him, our shoulders touching, and he opened the email. Two reviewers. Standard structure. I read the first reviewer's summary and felt my chest tighten with the particular anxiety of someone watching their work be measured.

I made myself busy by reading all of those pieces and taking note of the important things that should be put into the review. Actually, I'm scared about writing a review because I don't know if it's going to be good or bad. I haven't written one except for the book reviews I uploaded online for the books that I have read. Mostly of those reviews only tackle the good parts of the book. I don't usually put bad reviews because I was scared of being too honest. I feel like being honest will set me up for an argument with someone, and confrontations scare the hell out of me.
