But then, suddenly, Caleb pulled away from me, leaving me confused and breathless. I groaned in protest, trying to pull him back in, but he resisted. When I opened my eyes to look up at him, I saw him fighting an internal battle with himself. His eyes were troubled, but he seemed to be winning that internal battle. Finally, he closed his eyes on a sigh and when he opened them again, his eyes were a lighter shade of blue, exuberating calm and control; complete opposites of what I was feeling.

I let it go longer than I should have. The longer I waited, the harder it was to break away. I rested my head on his chest, not yet willing to escape from his embrace. I shouldn’t have let him kiss me. The backlash was already coming at me as a torrent of conflicting emotions that swirled within me, and I still couldn’t sort out which ones were mine and which ones were not. The muscle in his jaw feathered as he clenched and unclenched it. I didn’t seem to be the only one struggling with internal conflict. He let his arms fall and took a step back to look at me. “Will you tell me what happened between you and your wolf?”
