For a pure page-turner, I'd throw '1st to Die' from that series into the top tier. It's the formula at its most effective. Personally, I think the Michael Bennett books with James O. Born are underrated—they have a more procedural, grounded feel compared to some of the more outlandish plots. The fan rankings I see online always seem to put the standalone 'Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas' way up there too, which shows how his appeal stretches beyond just crime.

I wonder how much of it is the shift to co-writing. The name 'James Patterson' on a cover is a seal of a certain type of fast-paced, accessible story, but the actual prose voice varies wildly depending on the co-author. This might affect long-term rankings and re-reads. People attach to an author's unique voice. If the voice isn't consistent, the attachment might be to the brand and the experience (a quick, entertaining read) rather than to the specific literary qualities. So, a book can rank high on release because it promises that reliable experience, but it may not join the canon of his most beloved, re-read works. The career arc shows a move from author-led success to brand-led success, with rankings reflecting the power of the brand.
