Honestly, I’ve always had mixed feelings about Duke characters in stories. On one hand, they often bring this fascinating dynamic of authority and complexity—like Duke Leto in 'Dune' or even the scheming Duke Orsino in 'Twelfth Night.' But sometimes, they just feel like overused tropes, especially when they’re written as one-dimensional villains who exist solely to oppress the protagonist.
That said, my absolute favorite take on a Duke has to be from 'The Lies of Locke Lamora.' The way the Duke of Camorr is portrayed adds so much depth to the political intrigue of the story. It’s not about hating or loving the archetype—it’s about how well they’re written. A lazy Duke character? Yeah, I’ll roll my eyes. But a well-crafted one? That’s storytelling gold.
