"Good game last night," Ava said, and she said it flatly and she meant the opposite and they both knew it.

"Clean routine," he said, and he said it the same way, flat and specific, and she understood that they were both doing the same thing, using the public language because the private language was not available to them in a grocery store on a Saturday morning in front of a twelve year old.
