The first chords filled the room, soft and warm, something old and simple that Cloe recognised from somewhere deep, a song her mother used to hum when Cloe was small, long before any of this, long before Marshall, long before any of the years that had felt like survival rather than living.
She looked at Mac.
“How did he know this song,” she said.
“I didn’t,” Dave said, overhearing. “Ada said it was a guess based on the era of music you usually sing badly in the kitchen.”
