Melody exhales once, sharp and centering, then turns, half to the desk, half to me, already rearranging the world into steps.
“First,” she says, “we treat that package as evidence. You didn’t open it, did you?”
“No.” My voice is a whisper.
“Good,” she says. “No one touches it except me. And it doesn’t go anywhere near the Queen.”
I swallow hard. “He’ll know if she doesn’t die.”
Melody’s eyes cut to mine. “He’ll know if you do something sloppy. He won’t know if you do something clever.”
My heartbeat stutters. Melody sets the package down carefully, then reaches for a cloth and wraps it, sealing it away like it’s radioactive.
