Daniel looked at Naomi, not completely believing what she just said. He turned to the young lady. "I will pay for it no need to worry."

Naomi glared over at him, so lost in her anger that she spat out any word that came to the tip of her tongue. "And did I ask you to pay for it? That’s what you do, and not just you but men over all; throw money on women just so you can get inside of their pants."

Daniel's neutral face expression changed, his eyes twitching as he drew back his hand with the thumb drive. "You know what? I will drop this off another time because my appetite is now ruining …"

He picked up his bag, walking through the exit without saying another word to Naomi.

Naomi shoved her cup of coffee aside and pushed her chair back in order to get out of it. Towards the door she then stomped, bumping right back into Daniel. "Sorry." She grumbled out, stepping out of his way.

Daniel let out a breath of irritation. “The pessimist...? why did you have to insult her like that?"

"Didn’t you see what she did? Look at my clothes!"

"You know it wasn’t intentional Naomi."

“Well, she should have been more careful then. Now if you'd please excuse me. Time is money and I have wasted enough on you."

"I honestly didn't know you were like this. Go...if I could, I'd give you back your time.”

Naomi walked away from him, opening up her car door and entering it. She started it up with her keys and began to reverse her way out of the parking lot, but luck was not on her side. Her car collided with a black BMX 2020 that was parked right behind her.

Naomi gasped, her body jerking along with the car as she instinctively pressed down on the breaks. She looked behind her at the car she just hit, then at Daniel who ran towards her. "Are you okay?!"

Naomi nodded, eyes unfocused as she stepped out of her car. Did something like this have to happen now? Her mood was already down and this did absolutely nothing to lift it. "I'm fine. I just need to get in touch with the owner of the ca—"

"What the hell did you do to my car?" Stacy’s voice rang out in suddenness. Both Naomi and Daniel looked over at her.

"Is this your car?"

"Yes, and you’d better start calling your insurance because I need it fixed today!"

The anger in her voice was evident, but Naomi ignored it. "I will bring it to a mechanic now. Is that okay with you?"

Stacy chuckled, the sound humourless as she remembered just what conspired on the inside just minutes ago. Karma has always been a replay.

“He better get it done today, and tell me, how am I going to get there?"

"Well I..."

Daniel looks at Naomi, sighing at the defeated look on her face. "I can call a friend of mine to bring it on his tow truck?"

Stacy nodded. "Alright, do that."

"I guess I do not need to come then." Naomi butted in.

Stacy rolled her eyes. "You must be kidding me! How will it get fixed? This kind gentleman is only doing you a favour…?”

"I didn't ask him to." Naomi softly uttered.

"What did you just say?" Stacy asked.

Daniel pretended as though he didn’t hear her as he dialled his friend Mark. The phone rang thrice before it was picked up. "Daniel...?"

"Hey, Mark are you available to do a job for me? An accident happened not too long ago. Your tow truck would be of great help."

"As long as I'm getting paid, I'll be there."

“Ok, I am at 1615 Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028”.

"Alright I'll be there in the next 15 minutes."

"Thanks."

The call ended and as soon as Daniel pocketed his phone, Naomi started towards her car. She pulled at the door to the driver's seat, a sudden pain invading her head as she jerked backwards with the car door. Her vision became blurry, fading slowly until all she could see was black.

She could feel herself falling backwards and before she completely lost consciousness, she heard her name being yelled and felt her body being caught by strong arms instead of by the thick asphalt beneath her feet.

"Naomi! Naomi! Are you alright?!" Daniel shook the unconscious girl, his eyes darting around until they landed on the waitress. "Call an ambulance...call them fast!"

Stacy pulled out her phone quickly, dialling and redialling until she was finally in touch. She gave out information as well as the address with sweaty palms, worry in her gaze despite the fact that she didn't like the woman who now laid on the ground. "They're coming."

Daniel shook Naomi’s chest again, her name repeatedly slipping off his tongue in aid of receiving a response. She barely moved, but sadly, her eyes still weren’t open.

This day wasn't going as well as he thought it would...damn!

Naomi barely slept. Her study light remained on through the early hours, casting long, watchful shadows across case files and legal pads. A cold cup of tea sat untouched by her elbow, its warmth long forgotten. She had run every scan she could think of, traced digital fingerprints, compared backups—and still, nothing pointed to the culprit.Nothing obvious. At 5:42 a.m., her front gate clicked open.Naomi was already at the window.Daniel stood outside the gate, hoodie pulled over his head, hands in his pockets. She hesitated, then buzzed him in. By the time he reached the front porch, she was holding the door open, eyes still rimmed with fatigue.“I couldn’t sleep,” he said.“Join the club,” she replied, stepping aside to let him in.He followed her into the kitchen. She poured two mugs of coffee, black, no sugar—their unspoken agreement from weeks past. For a moment, they just stood there, the silence almost comfortable. Then Naomi spoke.“T

Naomi stared at her phone long after the line went dead. The breeze that once felt warm now clung to her skin like a warning. She blinked, trying to refocus, but the world around her had already started shifting—tilting, cracking at the edges of what she believed was solid ground.Detective Harlan’s words rang in her ears."Someone tampered with the originals."She closed her eyes, gripping the railing beside the back steps. Her breath came shallow, the weight of the moment crashing down like a verdict.“Naomi?”Grace was at her side, eyes narrowing the instant she saw Naomi’s face.“What happened?”Naomi opened her mouth, then shook her head. “Not here. Not now.”Grace nodded, sensing the depth of the moment. “Come on,” she said, guiding her inside and up to Naomi’s study—her private space, where chaos had no permission to intrude. As soon as the door clicked shut, Naomi turned and paced. “The evidence—Daniel’s alibi, his timestamps, security camera pulls—they were tampered with.”Gr

Naomi felt the air shift as Daniel walked into the backyard, his presence pulling invisible strings that adjusted everyone’s posture and tone. Even the breeze felt different. Mark handed Daniel a plate, his smile tight. “Didn’t think we’d see you today.” Daniel accepted it without a blink. “Didn’t think so either. Life’s unpredictable like that.” Mark gave a short laugh, but it lacked warmth. “Well, hope you brought an appetite.” Naomi stepped between them before the tension could sharpen. “Daniel, why don’t you sit with Grace? I’ll get you something to drink.” Daniel’s eyes followed hers to the table, where Grace was already waving him over like an old friend. He gave Naomi a subtle look—one that said thank you—before walking off. As Naomi turned back toward the kitchen, Mark followed her. “So, you knew he was coming?”

Naomi didn’t expect it—the way his voice dipped lower when he spoke to her, or how the air between them thickened every time they made eye contact. There were too many people around, too many reasons not to look too long. But Daniel… he wasn’t playing by the rules today. “Can we talk?” he murmured, just loud enough for her to hear. Naomi blinked, heart skipping. “Right now?” He nodded, already moving toward the side path that led to the garden. Without thinking, she followed. The second they turned the corner, the mask he wore outside slipped. “You didn’t call,” she said first, arms crossed. “You had me thinking—” “I know,” he cut in, stepping closer. “I’m sorry. Things got messy with the hospital, my mom… I didn’t know how to talk without breaking down.” Naomi’s jaw clenched, but her eyes softened. “You could’ve still tried.” “I’m trying now,” he said, voice low, intense. “And I didn’t come here for sympathy.” She met his gaze, defiant. “Then why did you come?” Daniel looke

Naomi’s hand trembled slightly as she placed the phone back into her pocket. She didn’t realize how long she stood there until Grace gave her a slight nudge.“Naomi, you okay?”“I don’t know. I just... I feel so useless right now. Daniel’s going through it, and here I am hosting some half-baked party I don’t even care about.”Grace shook her head gently. “You’re not useless. You’ve done more for him than anyone else probably has. But right now, he’s where he needs to be, and so are you. Don’t let guilt mess up the good you’re trying to do.”Naomi sat back down, letting out a long sigh. “I didn’t even want to do this today. But I thought… maybe if I kept busy, I wouldn’t feel so helpless.”Grace pulled a chair beside her. “Then let’s make the best of it. Eat, smile, and breathe. You’re allowed to live too, Naomi.”Before Naomi could respond, the scent of sizzling meat wafted through the air. Mark was by the grill now, apron half-tied and humming a tune like he
