Eric watched, afraid and confused, as she reached up, plucking a strand of blonde hair off his forehead. And then, without warning, a flash of green light enveloped the entire room, causing the lightbulbs lining the ceiling to explode in sparks as they fell down. Eric screamed and covered his ears, squeezing his eyes shut. A moment later, after what felt like several hours had passed, he dared to crack an eye open. Nothing. Only darkness. Darkness, and a ringing in his head. Nothingness...

The hum of servers and the flicker of fluorescent lights gave the bunker an antiseptic unreality, as if reality itself was being sterilized. On the large monitor, grainy satellite footage looped without mercy. A flaming mountain in Turkey. A blurred winged shape, moving too fast for the eye. Villages gone in minutes. And beside it, security footage from Crescent Mall: a massive beast mid-leap, three heads snarling, jaws open wide enough to snap steel. The comparison was undeniable. “Same signature,” the technician muttered, his fingers trembling on the keyboard. “Tri-phased electromagnetic spikes. Identical to the Ararat incident.”

Lorenzo exchanged glances with me who was pleading with him with my sorrowful eyes, wishing my unsaid words could reach his heart. However, everybody was shocked when he scoffed, shaking his head as he muttered his apology to me for being unable to hold back. His heart would never be at peace if he ended it like this and without a second thought he slammed its pointy edge straight at his neck, and the annoying laugh came to an instant halt. Spike was forced into coughing as he shielded his bleeding neck, fighting to catch his breath. He was surprised beyond measure that he'd actually done it.

I asked. He plucked the headphones from around his neck and gently placed them over my head. Then he handed me a plastic cassette case with names of songs written in messy block letters. I heard a click, and then my head nearly exploded. Pounding, concussive blasts of drums and guitars in unison: BUM, BABABA-BUM, BABABA-BUM, BABABABABA-BUM. I winced, took off the headphones, and handed them back. “That’s Diamond Head,” he said with a grin. “They’re fuckin’ awesome, right?”

"No... please.... I'll be good..." Eric sighed. "It's too late for that," he said. "Nobody spits in my face and gets away with it." He jabbed the baton into her ear, and she shrieked as the electricity passed through her body. Now it was her turn to do the Jitterbug. She was vaguely aware of the fact that she had wet herself, and then she lost consciousness. ****

It was designed to bore directly through the skull and force a memory extraction at twice the normal power. With trembling hands, Daniel lowered the helmet onto my head and activated it. The spike punched through my skull and drove deep into my brain. "Ugh..." Blood-flecked foam spilled from my mouth as my entire body convulsed uncontrollably. "While the spike is still holding! Maximum power!" Under the overwhelming surge of electricity, I unexpectedly regained a fleeting moment of clarity. With immense effort, I turned my eyes toward Daniel and forced out my final words. In the split second it took her to open the door, and before Suki and Rey could intensify their kiss as they desperately craved, Rey used his wolf speed to launch himself back, away from Suki, before bolting into the bathroom.
