The fire crackled low, the rain still roaring against the roof.
When she finally spoke, her tone had changed. “Twins born under two moons,” she murmured, “that’s no small omen.”
I looked to her, confused. “Two moons?”
She pointed to the window.
Outside, through the storm clouds, the sky had split, one full moon glowing pale and white, another haloed faintly in red behind it, as if the heavens themselves couldn’t decide which to show.
Nilam’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Two moons, two souls. Destiny and ruin, side by side. Remember that, girl.”
