“Your uncle Jerry paid those rogues to kill us.” I stared at him for a moment, trying to process the words. “That’s impossible.” “It’s the truth,” he replied. My mother rolled her eyes. “Here we go again.” “You knew?” I turned to her. “Your father believes whatever Isolde tells him,” she answered dismissively. My father’s expression hardened. “Because she brought me proof.” I looked back at him. “Jerry wanted the Alpha title,” he continued, breathing heavily between sentences. “He thought if you and I died during the attack, the position would fall to him.”

I will make sure that you all regret why you did this.” Thomas coughed. “So you are in on this with the Alpha?”

She made him look at her. “You made a mistake. A cruel one. A foolish one. A mistake born from fear and grief and pride.” His jaw tightened. “But you have not yet done something terrible.” She said, “Not if you move now.” His eyes burned silver. Marla squeezed his arms. “There is still time to make this right.” For one second, he looked like he might break. Then the Alpha returned. Not the cold one who had rejected Althea. This was older and sharper. A wolf that had finally scented danger near what belonged to him.

Rose sobbed and I bit my lip. It was just her cries that filled the area now. I couldn’t move. My heart felt raw and I shook. Sure, I had made mistakes as Alpha. I wasn’t perfect and even though people loved to point them out, I never got anyone killed. Not until today. Suddenly, the thought of being unfit as Alpha drove further into my soul. My choice to leave the line, to ignore Bryan, ignore Leo, ignore Faris. I ignored them all and it cost me the life of my best friend and my Luna’s brother, the packs Beta, and his newborn nephew’s uncle. “You! You did this! You killed him!”

No one deserved to be in this horrible situation—Except Freya, though. I just hated that woman with every fiber of my being. I was sure that she had transferred all of her bad luck to me and that was the reason the moon goddess had turned her back against me and ruled everything in favor of Freya. This pack was a living nightmare, and Alpha Nigel made it hell for me. He was the devil’s incarnate and the level of atrocities he committed made me understand why he never associated with a lot of Alphas from the other packs.
