“Jane, everything about the last forty eight hours has been unusual.” Sammy squeezed my hand again. “You didn’t look scared,” he said quietly. “You looked… certain.” That made my stomach twist. Because he was right. When I said that word, there was no doubt in me. No hesitation. Just certainty so solid it scared me after the fact. Jane exhaled slowly. “Okay. We’ll come back to that.” She turned sharply toward Sammy. “The book you mentioned. The one from the hidden library. Are you with it or is it still there.”

The portrait on the opposite wall no longer looked ordinary. The eyes of his grandfather seemed to point toward a single bookshelf. Emma noticed it too. "Liam..." "I think he's showing us something." Liam stood immediately. They hurried toward the shelf. Dozens of books covered it. Most looked untouched. But one book stood out. Unlike the others, its spine was clean. Someone had handled it recently. Emma reached for it. "Wait," Liam said. "It could be another trap." Emma smiled nervously. "At this point, everything is a trap."

I added, echoing what I’d said during our first bet. Sam’s hand found my knee again, and his lips were suddenly by my ear. "You’re going to pay for a comment like that," he whispered darkly. Butterflies erupted in my stomach. "I choose the one with the sword." Sam’s fighter hurled his sword at my chosen fighter, driving it straight into his stomach. I swallowed hard, a secret thought forming in my mind. (Hey guys, just to let you know; I am currently writing a book about a vicious dragon.
