Ludwig slipped to her side and turned to look at her after supporting his head on the palm on the propped up elbow. “Those were the rebel leaders, who had breached the castle wall yesterday around midnight.”
Penny’s eyes became wide. “Why would they do it now? Did they plan to disrupt our wedding? I mean… it was bad timing.”
He picked up a loose strand of her hair from her neck and worried it in his fingers. “Yes, that was their main purpose.” He smelled her hair. “Each of the rebel leaders had breached at different places and they had over two dozen men with each of them. My guards were waiting for them to enter inside the castle in order to take them down, according to my instructions.”
Penny frowned. Waiting? “Did you know about them?&
