The shadows in Zephyr's eyes slowly faded. Like smoke clearing after a fire.
He blinked. Once. Twice. Then looked around the camp with slight confusion on his face.
"What happened?" he asked quietly, massaging his forehead.
"You zoned out," Lucian said. Relief clear in his voice. "Are you okay?"
Zephyr nodded slowly. But his hands still shook.
"I could feel her," he whispered. "Laura. She's so lonely."
Dante stepped forward. "Where? Can you track her based on that?"
"I...I." Zephyr's voice cracked. "I'm not sure, it's too faint."
Before anyone could respond, Viktor came running toward them. His face was grim.
"Alphas," he called out. "We have reports."
"What kind of reports?" Lucian asked.
"Shadow wolf attacks. Three villages hit last night."
The news hit like a punch to the gut.
"How bad?" Dante demanded.
"Bad. Millfield is gone. Everyone dead or missing. Riverside had twenty killed before the survivors ran."
"And the third village?"
"Oakenbrook. They held out longer. But barely."
