~Isabelle~
Today was the day scheduled to hand over the divorce papers to Victor. Jason’s arrival was like a miracle, because without asking much questions, he swung into action, and in less than four hours, he had gotten me a lawyer and a divorce will had been crafted.
I meant it when I told Victor that I was no longer returning to that house, so I instructed the lawyer Jason got for me to prepare the divorce proceedings in a courtroom. That way, it was strict and professional, and I also instructed him to include in the letter of invitation to the court issued to Victor that no family member was allowed to attend the proceeding.
It had to be just the two of us.
I did that because I did not want to have to deal with his cruel and antagonistic family, because I knew that if they showed up at the court, they would throw shades at me.
“I hope he will not be late,” I said to Jason worriedly as we sat in the car that Jason had rented when he arrived and waited for the lawyer.
It was surprising that I did not have a personal lawyer, but then again, when I stripped myself of my family name, wealth, and connection and married Victor, no one had expected that a “lowlife” girl like me would need a lawyer, let alone be able to afford one, so I simply maintained that profile, and in truth, I hadn’t had need of one until now.
“He will, trust me,” Jason said. “You are just nervous for nothing, Isabelle; you are not even late,” Jason added.
I nodded in agreement and continued to wait.
“I have already booked our ticket to fly back home, so the minute you are done and the divorce is final, I will be driving you straight to the airport,” Jason informed me out of the blue.
Since when he showed up at the hospital, we hadn’t had time to talk, especially being that I had given him an assignment almost immediately, so I looked at him, surprised.
“What? You did say you were done with Victor Walters, correct?” Jason asked me.
“Yes, I am,” I answered, but that wasn’t the reason for my surprise; I just hadn’t thought that I would be dealing with my immediate family or returning back right after, especially after everything. I had thought that I would stay with Sasha for a while before making any further decision, but I didn’t say any of this to Jason.
Besides, I needed the distance from Victor.
The lawyer knocked on the car door thankfully, and Jason opened the door for him to enter.
“Are we ready?” Barrister Andrew asked me.
“Of course,” I answered and released the breath I was holding.
Then Jason drove us both to the court. We arrived there quite on time, which was good, because it would create a bad impression if the party doing the filing arrived late. Involuntarily, I glanced around to see if Victor had arrived, but he hadn’t.
“I am coming with you,” Jason said, unhooking his seatbelt.
“You can’t,” I said, too quickly.
“Why?” Jason asked.
“The order is that it is just Isabelle, Victor, and their lawyers; no family members included,” Barrister Andrew explained, saving me from the task of doing so.
“Who the heck made that arrangement?!” Jason was highly displeased. “I am certain that it is that control-freak, Victor,” Jason added, grounding his teeth in anger.
Knowing it was me who asked for it, I decided not to say a word.
“Just hang around for a few minutes, and please, you cannot speak to or confront Victor when he comes…you cannot even let him know of your presence, otherwise it would dissolve the divorce proceedings,” I told Jason all at once.
“She is right, Jason,” Barrister Andrew added, and that was enough to stop Jason from throwing tantrums.
Anyway, it wasn’t long after we settled into the courtroom that Victor and his lawyer arrived. Of course, his lawyer was undeniably one of the best in the city, but that did not deter me, because I knew exactly what I wanted.
I sensed Victor trying to catch my eyes, and I deliberately avoided eye contact, because I did not even want to see him. I already told Barrister Andrew that I wanted the whole process to be as quick and painless as possible.
Barrister Andrew began confidently. “My client wants this process to be easy and quick, and professional at best. Now that that is out of the way, we all know why we are here already, so there is no need to beat around the bush,” he continued.
His confidence made me feel more at ease, even though I still vehemently refused to meet Victor’s eyes. In fact, being in the same space with him made me angry and hurtful, as though the wounds inflicted on me by him and his family had just been cut open afresh.
Barrister Andrew brought out the divorce paper and passed it to Victor’s fancy and expensive lawyer.
“The divorce has already been signed by my client already, Miss Isabelle, so your client needs to also sign once you have read through so that this would be over and done with,” Barrister Andrew said to Victor’s lawyer who immediately began to read through the paper.
Victor scoffed, but he sounded somewhat shocked and wounded. “Miss already?” he asked, but neither I nor Barrister Andrew responded to him. “Are you even a legal and qualified lawyer?” Victor just wouldn’t give it a rest.
I knew why he asked that question; to ridicule me and make himself feel better, but this would be the last time he would ever get that chance.
“Of course,” Barrister Andrew said as he handed his ID card to Victor for verification.
“You should sign this; it’s all clear,” Victor’s lawyer told him.
I caught a flicker of shock in Victor’s eyes as he stared at his lawyer, befuddled.
“Do I really have to sign this?” Victor asked.
He really wanted to tie me back, but I would be damned if I would ever let that happen, and I knew that Victor would try something like this, which was why I gave Barrister Andrew all the instructions I gave him when he was preparing the divorce paper.
“You cannot decide not to sign it, Mr. Walters; it has been ordered by the court. Besides, she already dropped your name,” Victor’s lawyer told him.
I watched Victor sign the divorce paper, right next to my own signature, and I felt free as a bird!
~Victor~I got up really early, got dressed in my casual outfit and left the house before my mum or sisters could even get out of bed. When I had returned from saving Isabelle, my mum and Mona had tried to throw tantrums for abandoning Mona in the middle of the road and going for Isabelle even after promising otherwise, but I had simply blocked out their words, gone into my room and shut my door. When I drove out of the mansion, I called my secretary. “I am going to be absent today. Tell my team leaders to take the day off as well, and if you need anything, regardless of how urgent it might be, please do not call me; simply send an email,” I instructed her.“Mr. Victor, are you okay?” She asked with concern in her voice.“Just do as you are told,” I told her and ended the call. Then I drove right to the cabin away from town that I had privately bought for just myself and Isabelle. The first year we had met, I had fallen madly in love with Isabelle, so much so that I couldn’t get enoug
~Isabelle~Sasha had to practically drag me all the way to Barrister Andrew’s office even though I tried to tell her that it wasn’t exactly necessary. “We are going to be meeting in court in two days, Sash, what is the need?” I had asked, trying to persuade her.“It baffles me that you are taking this for granted, but I am not going to let you put your life at risk. We are going to see your lawyer, and take possible legal actions,” Sasha had declared firmly.“Sasha, you do know that filing a legal action incurs a lot of money, and I don’t have that. Besides, I am already spending a lot on this divorce thing with Victor,” I had told Sasha weakly. However, it was impossible to dissuade Sasha once she had already set her mind to doing anything. “You are not going to talk me out of this one, Belle,” Sasha had warned. “You have the means to afford these things, Isabelle. Why do you keep putting your life at risk? Why are you hiding who you are?!” Sasha had almost begun to blow hot.“You w
~Victor~I felt like a complete zombie as I drove out of Sasha’s neighborhood. Things with Isabelle had gotten worse than I had anticipated, and that was way different from what I had hoped would happen. At the same time, I was more than grateful that I had followed my instincts, because the thought of what might have happened to Isabelle sent shivers down my spine. My heart and face hardened as I thought of Mr. Hedge.I knew he was a dangerous man, but I never anticipated that he would that dangerous enough to try to kill Isabelle simply because she seemed to be standing in the way of me and Sara. I was getting close to the house, and I knew that if I wanted to do anything, I would have to do it before I got there, so I took my phone and dialed the number of a senior cop whom I had once made his acquaintance a while back.Thankfully, he picked on the first ring. “Mr. Victor, it is such a delight to be getting a call from you,” he said cheerful the moment the call connected.Upon hea
~Isabelle~I squeezed my eyes in pain as Victor left. I did not even bother keeping my ears alert to be certain that he had left the apartment, even though he now scared the hell out of me; I was too broken and my heart was too pained to even listen to anything else.I continued to close my eyes tightly, because I was trying every means possible not to cry; that was exactly how I was feeling deep inside. It was bad enough that Victor had hurt me in more ways than one since I filed for a divorce, and if he had simply let me go, I would not even have seen or known about any of this. Was this why he pushed for the divorce to be readdressed; so that he could drag me back to Seagate City and torment the heck out of me?What was the story behind this attack? It was obvious now that Victor either knew something or was even involved, and I could not even explain how that made me feel. I would never do anything to hurt or harm Victor or even any member of his family even though I deeply hated
~Isabelle~I wondered why I hadn’t even thought of that to begin it. Usually, in situations like this, after knocking him down, Victor would have been concerned about holding the attacker down and instantly calling the cops so that he would be arrested, and whoever sent him would be known as well, because I had no doubt that someone must have sent him to me.First of all, Sasha had lived in this very apartment for more than four years, and there had never been a break-in; not in her apartment or any of the other apartments situated in the neighborhood, and secondly, he waited until Sasha had left the house before breaking-in to attack me. It was very obvious that he did not come to steal or rob us; he intentionally came to kill me.The thought of it even made me shiver.“Can you answer that?” I asked when Victor kept mute.I caught a flicker of guilt in his eyes before it was quickly replaced by regret and sadness, and it made me even more uncomfortable? Did Victor have anything to do
~Isabelle~I heard a loud thud as I closed my eyes, which even made me confused, because I had been dreadfully anticipating a painful slit over my throat, or a piercing stab to my stomach, but the thud came as a shock, and more confusing was the fact that I did not feel any pain. Then I opened my eyes.“Isabelle, are you okay?” Victor asked.I hadn’t known when Victor entered into the apartment or when he even did, and although I was surprised and still confused, I was more than relieved. I looked down and saw the man writhing on the floor, but almost immediately, he struggled to his feet and scampered out of the apartment without anyone of us chasing after him.“Isabelle, breathe…” Victor was saying when I continued to look dazed and confused.I tried to breathe, but I had held my breath for too long that it had become stuck, and so I didn’t even know when I slid into unconsciousness. I felt myself being carried in the air and laid gently, but I just couldn’t open my eyes or protest
