~Isabelle~
As soon as Victor finished signing the divorce papers, his lawyer handed my copy over to Barrister Andrew.
“It is done,” he said. “You two are now officially divorced,” he added.
The words sounded like music to my ears, and even though I saw Victor sign, I still wanted the satisfaction of seeing it for myself, so I looked at it again, and indeed, it was Victor’s signature, not that he would give a fake signature anyway.
“Is there anything anyone would like to say?” Victor’s lawyer asked.
“No,” I answered instantly, and the look of shock that showed in Victor’s face was unmistakable. “We are officially divorced, as you rightly confirmed, so what are we possibly supposed to say to each other, congratulations?” I sneered.
Even Victor’s lawyer was taken aback by my mocking tone.
In fact, as soon as it was done, I wanted to stand up instantly and leave so that I would get away from Victor as fast as possible, but then again, Jason was outside waiting for me. If I got up and left, there was every tendency that Victor would also follow behind, and I did not want to take the chance of him finding out about Jason’s presence, so I lingered, and thankfully, Barrister Andrew understood so well that he did not bother to ask us to leave.
“Since that is all, I suggest we go now,” Victor’s lawyer turned to Victor and said.
He sounded like he had other engagements, which wouldn’t be surprising, because a lawyer such as himself would have cases and appointments piled up for the day, and he would hate to spend another second just sitting and doing absolutely nothing.
They stood up to leave and Victor tried to catch my eyes one last time, but I intentionally looked away. We hadn’t made eye contact since we got into the courtroom, and that was all my doing. Aside from the fact that I wanted nothing to do with Victor Walters anymore, I wanted him to know that I was truly done.
Not half done, not done with double-minds, but truly and completely done!
But as Victor and his lawyer approached the door, Victor stopped and said to his lawyer. “You know what, I will meet you outside.”
I rolled my eyes in disdain as Victor turned around and walked towards where we still sat.
“Isabelle, I need a word with you in private,” Victor said, his voice pleading, even though pride was still rearing its ugly head up.
Barrister Andrew got up to give us some privacy, but I stopped him immediately.
“Please, Barrister Andrew, I do not want to be left alone with this man, because he is now a stranger to me,” I said without flinching.
Victor winced at my tone, and it made me feel better.
“Whatever he wants to say should be said in your presence,” I added, hoping that Victor would change his mind, but I was wrong.
“What has come over you?” Was Victor’s first statement. “We weren’t even officially divorced and you had already removed the same that gave you importance,” Victor added.
Importance? I scoffed; if only Victor knew who I was before I decided to let go of all of it and marry him instead.
“You know what, I changed my mind,” I said just as Victor opened his mouth to say another word. If he wasn’t going to change his mind, then I would. “Barrister Andrew, I am frankly not comfortable with his presence anymore,” I said.
“Isabelle,” Victor called, stunned, and he sounded pained.
Well, if I could inflict on him all the pain, hurt, humiliation, rejection, and embarrassment I received from his family for four years, I would!
“Mr. Victor Walters, I suggest you take your leave, or I will be forced to file a legal action against you for assault and disturbance. Remember, we are still in a courtroom,” Barrister Andrew told Victor firmly and professionally.
Gosh, I would pay with my life to keep the expression that flashed through Victor’s face on him, because it made me satisfied. I knew he was happy to lose me; at least now, he was free to marry Sara, so why the heck was he acting this way? Victor glared at me, annoyed that I had embarrassed him, and Barrister Andrew saw this.
“Miss Isabelle, would you like me to file for a restraining order?” he asked me.
“That won’t be necessary,” I answered, although I did not state why it wouldn’t be, because I wanted to leave Victor clueless.
Unable to take any more embarrassment, and maybe a feeling of disrespect, Victor turned and stormed out of the courtroom. When I was certain that he had driven out of the premises, I got up and walked out with Barrister Andrew.
“I know you and Jason are off to somewhere, so I have called a cab,” Barrister Andrew told me the moment we got to the parking lot. He did have a car, but then again, Jason had driven us here.
“Thank you, Barrister Andrew,” I said.
We shook hand and parted ways. Then I joined Jason in the car and he also drove out of the premises.
“Done?” Jason asked me.
“Yes,” I simply answered. “I am no longer married to Victor Walters,” I added plainly.
Even though Jason already stated that we were going straight to the airport earlier, I was still somewhat surprised when we faced the airport route.
“I still have some things I need to pick up at Sasha’s,” I told Jason.
“I knew you would, so I already asked her to pick them up and bring them to you to the airport,” Jason said.
I was a little disappointed, because quite frankly, I was looking for an excuse to delay just a little bit longer. Not that I was eager to stay back, but getting back to a family I had left for four years wasn’t exactly easy.
We got to the airport sooner than expected, and I immediately sighted our family’s private jet.
Then Jason turned to me and said, “We are heading home now, but I must warn you; it is nothing like you used to know it to be.”
I felt my entire body filled with goose bumps and dread.
~Victor~I got up really early, got dressed in my casual outfit and left the house before my mum or sisters could even get out of bed. When I had returned from saving Isabelle, my mum and Mona had tried to throw tantrums for abandoning Mona in the middle of the road and going for Isabelle even after promising otherwise, but I had simply blocked out their words, gone into my room and shut my door. When I drove out of the mansion, I called my secretary. “I am going to be absent today. Tell my team leaders to take the day off as well, and if you need anything, regardless of how urgent it might be, please do not call me; simply send an email,” I instructed her.“Mr. Victor, are you okay?” She asked with concern in her voice.“Just do as you are told,” I told her and ended the call. Then I drove right to the cabin away from town that I had privately bought for just myself and Isabelle. The first year we had met, I had fallen madly in love with Isabelle, so much so that I couldn’t get enoug
~Isabelle~Sasha had to practically drag me all the way to Barrister Andrew’s office even though I tried to tell her that it wasn’t exactly necessary. “We are going to be meeting in court in two days, Sash, what is the need?” I had asked, trying to persuade her.“It baffles me that you are taking this for granted, but I am not going to let you put your life at risk. We are going to see your lawyer, and take possible legal actions,” Sasha had declared firmly.“Sasha, you do know that filing a legal action incurs a lot of money, and I don’t have that. Besides, I am already spending a lot on this divorce thing with Victor,” I had told Sasha weakly. However, it was impossible to dissuade Sasha once she had already set her mind to doing anything. “You are not going to talk me out of this one, Belle,” Sasha had warned. “You have the means to afford these things, Isabelle. Why do you keep putting your life at risk? Why are you hiding who you are?!” Sasha had almost begun to blow hot.“You w
~Victor~I felt like a complete zombie as I drove out of Sasha’s neighborhood. Things with Isabelle had gotten worse than I had anticipated, and that was way different from what I had hoped would happen. At the same time, I was more than grateful that I had followed my instincts, because the thought of what might have happened to Isabelle sent shivers down my spine. My heart and face hardened as I thought of Mr. Hedge.I knew he was a dangerous man, but I never anticipated that he would that dangerous enough to try to kill Isabelle simply because she seemed to be standing in the way of me and Sara. I was getting close to the house, and I knew that if I wanted to do anything, I would have to do it before I got there, so I took my phone and dialed the number of a senior cop whom I had once made his acquaintance a while back.Thankfully, he picked on the first ring. “Mr. Victor, it is such a delight to be getting a call from you,” he said cheerful the moment the call connected.Upon hea
~Isabelle~I squeezed my eyes in pain as Victor left. I did not even bother keeping my ears alert to be certain that he had left the apartment, even though he now scared the hell out of me; I was too broken and my heart was too pained to even listen to anything else.I continued to close my eyes tightly, because I was trying every means possible not to cry; that was exactly how I was feeling deep inside. It was bad enough that Victor had hurt me in more ways than one since I filed for a divorce, and if he had simply let me go, I would not even have seen or known about any of this. Was this why he pushed for the divorce to be readdressed; so that he could drag me back to Seagate City and torment the heck out of me?What was the story behind this attack? It was obvious now that Victor either knew something or was even involved, and I could not even explain how that made me feel. I would never do anything to hurt or harm Victor or even any member of his family even though I deeply hated
~Isabelle~I wondered why I hadn’t even thought of that to begin it. Usually, in situations like this, after knocking him down, Victor would have been concerned about holding the attacker down and instantly calling the cops so that he would be arrested, and whoever sent him would be known as well, because I had no doubt that someone must have sent him to me.First of all, Sasha had lived in this very apartment for more than four years, and there had never been a break-in; not in her apartment or any of the other apartments situated in the neighborhood, and secondly, he waited until Sasha had left the house before breaking-in to attack me. It was very obvious that he did not come to steal or rob us; he intentionally came to kill me.The thought of it even made me shiver.“Can you answer that?” I asked when Victor kept mute.I caught a flicker of guilt in his eyes before it was quickly replaced by regret and sadness, and it made me even more uncomfortable? Did Victor have anything to do
~Isabelle~I heard a loud thud as I closed my eyes, which even made me confused, because I had been dreadfully anticipating a painful slit over my throat, or a piercing stab to my stomach, but the thud came as a shock, and more confusing was the fact that I did not feel any pain. Then I opened my eyes.“Isabelle, are you okay?” Victor asked.I hadn’t known when Victor entered into the apartment or when he even did, and although I was surprised and still confused, I was more than relieved. I looked down and saw the man writhing on the floor, but almost immediately, he struggled to his feet and scampered out of the apartment without anyone of us chasing after him.“Isabelle, breathe…” Victor was saying when I continued to look dazed and confused.I tried to breathe, but I had held my breath for too long that it had become stuck, and so I didn’t even know when I slid into unconsciousness. I felt myself being carried in the air and laid gently, but I just couldn’t open my eyes or protest
