I blink, looking at Corven dumbly for a second before I scramble to sit up,sending a stabbing pain through my head. I wince and grab my head, causing Corven to rush back to my side.

“No sudden movements,Anya.”

I brush him off, eager to see my sister

“Send her up,Corven,I need to see her!”

He furrows his brow slightly looking unsure

“What's wrong? Don't tell me she's not here?”

“No,no,of course she's here. It's Just that- Anya I- I-”

“Corven? What's wrong?”

His brows furrow further, and he scratches the back of his head.

“Don't get mad at me,spitfire. Please.”

“You're getting me worried,Corven. Come on,tell me what's wrong.”

He stands up and starts pacing.

“So,our marriage.”

“Yes?” My heart starts to beat faster, wondering what he's so worked up about telling me

“We knew about your magic and your truth as you already know. Marrying you would've been a risk to any family including ours. Even worse for us since like your House,we ensure that things like that are taken care of.”

I’m one edge. There’s guards everywhere. Carrying ammunition and walking around casually like its normal. From what I can see through the kitchen window, there’s more of them outside the vast compound. But that is not what has me on edge. It’s how everyone has chosen to ignore the elephant in the room. What brought us here in the place wasn't a small matter we should be ignoring acting like it never happened. But here we are, talking about mundane things as if I didn't burn down immortal beings and half a house. Well at least, they are,im only sitting here thinking about what the fuck im going to do now. It's very obvious now that there’s a target on our backs. Greta stands up tentatively and stretches a bit. “I’m going to take a nap. Hopefully when I wake up this time,I won't be whisked away to another location.” She says in a light chuckle, coupled with a wink at Lillian. A guard materialises and takes her hand to escort her out the room. It’s as if Greta took all the cheer a

When I wake up, I find myself in a big and spacious bedroom with mute colours and curtains drawn, preventing me from seeing what time of the day it is. It's pretty dark and whilst I appreciate that the sun wouldn't be glaring in my face,I don't know where I am and what the time is. So instead of drowning back into the bed and sleeping like I want to,I drag myself out and enter the nearest door, which leads to the bathroom. I relieve my bladder and wash my face, making me wide awake and alert. My dragon uncoils with a purr, well rested and satiated. The hell we unleashed at Greta’s house was satisfying. Greta,Ingrid.I feel a pang in my chest and gasp catch in my throat as I remember how my sister turned cold in my arms.I push the memory away and focus on Greta. She was sleeping in her room when everything went down, definitely her hearing aids were out since she never woke to check the commotion. I remember Corven's mother saying things would be taken care of,but to be honest,I don't kno

The silence before war is never silent. It is vibrant. Anyasense it in her teeth. The air was taut, like a wire drawn to the breaking point. The light was dimming. And then— Crack. It was as if the sky tore apart. A hole in the air yawned unexpectedly—teethed, dark, smoking—and from that unholy crevice flooded hooded men. Dozens. No—dozens and dozens. Masked. Dark-robed. And utterly still. Then they stirred. Fast. Corven had drawn his twin blades in one smooth motion, body dropping into a stance that yelled danger. His voice was strained. "Stay behind me." But Anya was already moving forward, her heart a drum in her ears. The wyrm within her uncurled at a slow pace, stretching under her skin like a god rising in rage. "They are not of our world," the wyrm spat. "And yet. they know your name. The first strike came like a hurricane. Steel whined as Corven met them, blade clashing against blade. A low charge came from one of the attackers—Corven leapt aside, cutting down into

The silence I feel within me is deafening. Unfamiliar to me since my dragon has been with me since birth. I’ve always had it as my companion. Now,I feel hollow and defenseless. It’s as if it was never there. I hear a loud thud from upstairs and I fear. My sister and Greta are up there. They definitely went for them.Terror and anguish rips through me as I realise that my existence has threatened the lives of everyone I hold dear. My parents are gone, and now,I'm about to lose the rest of my family. Tears spill from my eyes, rolling down my cheeks and I'm convinced to slump down and let them just kill me,but I hear him in my mind. Corven.“Spitfire,please. Get up.”The desperation and plea in his voice snaps my head to his direction and I whimper, when I see how bloodied he is. I raise my shaky hand to cover my mouth as a sob wracks through me. The masked fighters have not let up,they are torturing him. Making him bleed without letting him die. They continue to prolong his suffering, tea

The house had been eerily still after we realised what villains the gods truly were. But if mere mortals could wield magic and be equal to them, were they gods at all? Something wasn’t adding up and I wanted to know what. Desperately. Something wasn’t right. I could feel it deep down. Even my dragon was restless. I haven't been able to talk to Ingrid alone since she showed up because of the turn of events but I planned on it. She was all I had left of the family I knew. Everyone else was gone.Since there were only two rooms,Corven had to take the couch and leave our room for my sister and I,giving me the privacy and time to talk to her.As if summoned by my thoughts, she stepped into the room from the shower and stood in the middle of the room, looking slightly nervous. Ingrid and nervous were normally not in the same sentence but considering the recent events,I didn't think k much of it and pegged it on her unusual surroundings. I hop off the bed,my body slightly aching from the att

“He vanished." Ingrid's voice is trembling. Her hold on my arm is firm, her fingers digging into my flesh, but I don't move. I can't. My mind is trying to keep up with what has just happened. Uncle. He claimed he was my uncle. The name feels ugly. Filthy, nearly. Like a toxin disguised as a blessing. I turn in the direction where he was, and the air still bubbles feebly, as if something else came through time to greet us and left a mark behind. Corven drops off the roof, landing silently alongside us. His eyes darted to the empty space, to Ingrid, to me. "I felt it," he says. "He was here." "Who the fuck is he?" I gasp. Corven's expression darkens. “He’s not just anyone. I’ve seen him before… in the forbidden texts. He used to go by Vaelros Nytherin.” My breath stills. “Nytherin?” Corven nods. “Your mother's brother. High Lord of Nytherin before the house fell.” “But he died,” Ingrid whispers. “Didn’t he?” "History said that he was murdered for trying to open the veil. O
