Leaning through the lavish office windows, sunlight created lengthy shadows that covered Liam's desk. Jessica sat rigidly upright on the edge of the visitor's chair opposite him. A tightness sprang through the air, unrelated to the pile of financial records she held before her.

Liam, looking unusually stressed, was ruffling his hair, tampering with the normal flawless swoop. He said, "These quarterly reports are a nightmare," as he furtively skimmed the pages.

Jessica, couldn't help but point out, “I think handling them in batches would really help."

Liam winced. “Oh brother!”

Then he added, “Don't mind me. My father used to handle all this stuff. Unfortunately, his… absence has left a bit of a void."

Jessica couldn't deny a sliver of sympathy. Despite her initial suspicions about Liam, a glimpse of vulnerability softened his polished exterior. She focused on the reports, trying to ignore the way his blue eyes crinkled at the corners when he concentrated.

Her gaze suddenly fixed on an inconsistency – a discrepancy between a recent land acquisition and the associated loan amount.

"Mr. Thorne," she began cautiously, "there seems to be a slight discrepancy here." She pointed to the document in question. "The loan amount for one of the Bradndix properties doesn't seem to match the projected purchase price."

Liam leaned closer, brows furrowing as he examined the report. "You're right," he said after a moment. "That's… odd. I'll have to look into this with accounting."

Jessica wasn't convinced. The figures amiss felt deliberate. Was it possible Liam was in some kind of financial trouble?

She was set to find that out but first, the office work.

The office hours unfolded in a blur of paperwork, hushed conversations, and stolen glances. Liam, while initially guarded, revealed a dry wit that snuck Jessica a few genuine chuckles.

Later, Liam excused himself from the office while Jessica was alone working on some of the day's work, preparing to leave, a gust of wind sent a folder from Liam's pile of documents he seemed to be working on, fluttering to the floor. Bending down to pick it up, she noticed a file labeled 'Project Phoenix' tucked away in the scattered papers.

Curiosity piqued, she opened it. Inside were detailed reports on risky investments, written convert negotiations, and shady offshore accounts – all linked to Thorne Enterprises.

Then something gripped her even more. The name was Albert Lucas. That was the prime suspect in her previous case that almost landed her a dismissal and a dent in her career.

How was his name here?

Lucas's case slipped off her hand before she could place a pin on him and the agency didn't buy her excuse.

She read further and found out that a business deal had been carried on between Lucas and Liam in a signed agreement.

“What…?” She mouthed quietly to herself while darting around the room for any sign of Liam returning.

Without hesitation, she took out her phone and took clear pictures of the files.

At least now she has something on him to give to the agency.

Doubt still crept in her mind as the afternoon would have made her think him innocent.

Her heart hammered in her chest even further as she continued to stare at the file.

Was Liam really involved in something illegal?

Could this be the reason for his father's disappearance? She quickly shut the file, her mind racing.

Jessica froze, torn between her duty as a detective and Liam's attitude that she could have thought a moment ago, felt genuine.

Liam opened the door and she got jiggled to a rise. "I, uh… was just leaving. I… I finished with the batch we took out but these other reports can wait until tomorrow."

Liam's gaze narrowed, a flicker of suspicion crossing his face. "Is everything alright?" he asked, his voice devoid of its earlier warmth.

Jessica met his gaze, her heart racing almost to a stop. The fight going on in her head whether to confront him or simply keep quiet for now was non-stop.

“… Yes. All good.” She braced herself trying to come up with a quick excuse for her sudden reaction. “I just needed to get food. I'm starving.”

Buying the excuse, he offered “Oh. That's not a problem, I can have someone bring you something from the cafeteria.”

“... Uh. No.” She cuts him quickly and his eyes squinted observing her more.

“I just need to use the restroom then I'd go get something —”

Just then, the door opens and Miss Beth walks in on them. The scene she had seen made her want to excuse them. Liam had leaned forward, trying to care for her and Jessica looked all startled like something had sprung up in the little time they spent there.

“Do you need me to come back Mr Thorne?” Miss Beth asked.

He looked at Jessica not knowing whether to let her go out of concern for her or make Miss Beth excuse them.

With Miss Beth there, Jessica seized the opportunity to brace herself.

"Alright then. Miss Beth, please do that.” Liam responded.

“Check in on me in 10 minutes,” Liam added and Miss Beth left.

“I'm fine, truly.” Jessica maintained, her voice gaining conviction. “I just need to eat like I said.”

Now convinced, he replies “Alright then. Make sure to eat something substantial.”

Liam watched her leave the office and Miss Beth entered after. The conversation progressed from inside business to more corporate business but Liam wasn't sure why his mind drifted back to Jessica while being with Miss Beth.

“She was fine a moment ago.” He wondered quietly not understanding the sudden spurn.

“Women's problem maybe?” he pondered.

The tension had eased somewhat, replaced by a wary curiosity on both sides. Curiosity of a different nature. Jessica, clutching the secret she'd unearthed, gathered her belongings, her mind a whirlwind of questions, far from what Liam suspected.

As she left the office, she knew one thing for sure – their uneasy alliance had just taken a significant turn, and the line between suspicion and something more intriguing had become dangerously blurred.

Evelyn's birthday party was getting closer by the minute and the whole of TRIX would come to a halt to see it through. Jessica felt the need to act somewhat dry in the presence of Liam to avoid any strain of attraction that could spring between them. Liam couldn't help but notice her sudden drift but, as always, remained unshaken or unfazed by it.At intervals in the office, he stole glances at her. Maybe the way she worked on files, her facial features, or the movement of her lips when she spoke. There was something of note in everything she did.One time, she had requested to work in her office for reasons best known to her but he couldn't kick the fact that something definitely felt off between them. He thought to find out why but never to interrogate her.Of course, he cared about her and would want her in his space each time, but suddenly, it looked like she wanted none of that.Jessica knew all she was doing would take a toll on Liam in a way; her absence and perhaps, shift fr

The preparations for Evelyn's birthday were still ongoing and the event was gradually coming together.“..... The guest list, how about the guest list?” Jessica had asked Miss Beth.“It's to be formed by Miss Evelyn. She has her way with these kinds of things. She will send that across soon, I suppose.” Miss Beth replied. It was another bright sunny day at the TRIX, and Jessica was all about the affairs at the office, but the upcoming party needed a bit of attention now and then.At the office, Jessica couldn't help herself but remember the previous night with Greg. How he had arrived just in time and saved her from the grip of Mike. And not to mention, the kiss. It was everything she had been missing. A touch of that added a glimpse of excitement for the night. Somehow, these thoughts meddled with the daily activities. She caught herself smiling to herself on a few occasions. It was a healthy distraction, she had thought. A call came through from her office line, and she picked u

It was a relief to have Greg come in the time he did. Jessica could only be grateful. For a while, her thoughts drifted to Mike and she couldn't help but realize how desperate he was.He has never been like that towards her. This was indeed surprising. Greg caught her in the midst of the thought and that's when she collected herself together again.“..... I'm sorry to pry Jessica. That looked a bit personal. — I had to come in, it wasn't looking good.” Greg apologized.“I'm glad you did.” Jessica responded, still in the arms of Ann.That's when Jessica remembered the courtesy of introducing them to each other.“.... My friend, Ann.” Jessica said to Greg.“Ann, Greg.” To Ann.Greg stretched a hand formally for a handshake and Ann accepted. A glint in her eyes made him know he was welcome.“.... I really need to head home Jess. It's been a long day for me.” Ann said.“Let me walk you home.” Jessica offered but Ann wouldn't let her. Jessica understood what Ann meant to do and it was s

“What do you want?” Jessica asked bluntly “Jessica, please, can we talk?” Mike asked quickly.Jessica scoffed.“If you hadn't seen me in this part of town, you wouldn't have asked to talk, so what is it you want now?” She stormed at him.“I really wish you would give me an audience and hear me speak…. — I called and texted Jess. But you wouldn't respond to any……. And I can understand why.”“I just need the least of your time to explain how I really feel. — explain myself to you.” “..... And you're correct, I'm only asking to talk now because I see you but please just hear me out..”There was a long pause and Jessica stared at him blankly. He looked lost in a way she couldn't quite understand but she knew she didn't have to care.Just then, he made a move to hold her hands but she rejected his touch and spoke quickly after.“I'll listen to what you have to say.” “Can we sit down?” He asked.Jessica stood still, not bulging to his offer and then he pressed further.“Please, Jessica.”

Starting the preparations was not as difficult as Jessica would have thought. Everything came in handy. An event of the elites and wealthy was one not to be compared to the regulars. Beth, on the other hand, was useful. Jessica barely had to stress about anything. It was mere convenience and she wondered why she had been called upon by Evelyn in the first place. The colors for the place were picked and it was all coming together greatly. Meanwhile, at TRIX, Liam couldn't ignore the fact that he missed having his secretary in all the time. Jessica was often in, but her attention was needed for every picking that had to be done.Liam, at this point, still Wondered why he felt this way.He knew he was getting a rush of emotions every time he was at least two feet from her.It was hard to hide the burst of emotions but he needed to. “.... What would be Miss Evelyn's preference, Mr Liam?” She has asked, as they say, in his office, looking at some current documents on the recent deal wi

Evelyn walked back to her seat opposite Jessica. Now, Jessica had learned to look the woman before her in the eye.Maybe she didn't appreciate how timid she had appeared.Jessica immediately adjusted herself as the woman sat.“.... You know why I called you here?” Evelyn asked.“Certainly not.” “—But I'd suggest it's business and cooperate” “Well, you're wrong,” Evelyn answered.Jessica shook in fear of what Evelyn might say next. Why had she invited her in if not for the matters of TRIX?“..... Are you always this shaken with Liam?” She asked, taking a rest back in her seat.“Sometimes…” she replied.“..... Judging from what I saw at the conference room, not so often I guess.”“He's fond of you, I believe.” She continued.Jessica felt a surge of adrenaline by Evelyn's words. “It's in good faith….. We work closely together, so I suppose that could be the reason for that.”“Hmm…. I'm not disputing that. In fact, that's why I asked to see you.” “.... Because of Mr. Liam?” Jessica a
