SLADE

I groaned as I struggled to get on my feet. It felt like I’d been hit with a huge brick. My head throbbed from the pain, and my ears rang with the sound of the collapse.

The side of the tombs we were in seemed to have fallen in. Rocks and bricks were everywhere.

“What happened?” Silvia asked as she got up beside me, brushing dust from her hair.

“We walked into a trap,” I muttered, then quickly turned and rushed into the prison cell. My heart sank.

“She’s gone!” I shouted. Ivy’s chair was empty.

I turned and helped Maria to her feet.

“Thank you, Your Highness,” she said sweetly, but I scoffed. Now wasn’t the time for flattery.

“Who’s gone?” Riven asked as he groaned, trying to sit up.

“Scratch that—they're both gone,” I said sharply, referring to Ivy and Selene. “We need to set up checkpoints now. They couldn’t have gone far.”

Riven didn’t wait. He sprinted out of the ruins immediately.

“Damon!” Silvia’s voice cracked. I turned sharply, heart skipping.

“What?” I asked, walking ba

AYLAEverything around me felt soft. Quiet. Like I was floating.I opened my eyes slowly. I wasn’t in a bed or in the hospital. I stood in a field of glowing flowers. The sky was full of stars, and the wind was warm.I know this place. I gasped as I held my stomach. Mama, and I used to come, and play here. To get out of the politics of the Stormbringer pack. This is also the place she was killed. I looked around, and up. Then I saw her."Mama?" I whispered. She stood under a tall tree, smiling at me. Her long dress moved with the wind, and her eyes were full of light. She turned to me with that same kind smile she always had. The one that made me feel safe as a child.“You came,” she said softly.I took a shaky step forward. “Is this… real?”She nodded once. “Real enough for your heart to hear me.”Tears filled my eyes. “I’ve missed you so much.”“I have missed you too, my sweet girl,” she said as she hugged me tightly."You did well, my brave girl," she said, kissing my head. "You a

SLADEI could hear the sound of gun fire, and screams of soldiers around me. But everything still felt like an echo. I tried to open my eyes but I couldn't. My body felt heavy, and in a lot of pain. I blinked a little to see that the children were unarmed but still in danger. The soldiers were taking fire from every corner. “He’s alive,” I heard Major Collar's voice. “But I think he needs a medic.”“Ayla,” I said in my head. “I need Ayla.”“The find me,” I opened my eyes to see her standing over me, just where Major Collar stood.“You are so close,” I lifted my hands up to touch her.“But yet so far away,” she said as she withdrew. “Find me, Slade. Wake up!” She yelled, and I jerked up.“Your highness!” Major Collar yelled. “There was an explosion. You used your body to protect the children,” he said as I tried to stand up.“You shouldn't move, your highness. We have examined your injuries,” I got up, and looked at him.“I will stop moving when I'm dead,” I said, strongly. “Yes si

SLADEI could feel my heart pumping more blood than usual. The sweat on my forehead just kept coming, and pouring with every step I took.I could feel the rush of adrenaline reducing as I stepped in deeper into the hospital. “This is Captain Silvia, come in,” I heard in my earpieces, and I looked at Damon. He closed his eyes in relief. “This is King Slade,” I whispered. “Silvia what's the update?” I asked.“We have gotten the cure for the disease,” she said, and I stopped walking.“You are sure?” I asked again.“Yes, your highness. It is tested,” she answered, and I looked at Damon. “Silvia, are you able to speak freely?” Damon asked her.“As free as a bird,” Silvia said, and Damon nodded. She wasn't being coerced.“How did it happen so fast?” I asked her as we continued our entry into the hospital building.“Using the blood of the first person Ayla healed. With that person it was easy to modify,” she said, and I groaned.I have never liked the idea of science, and ancient powers.

SLADEThere was a sharp, unnatural silence in the command post. I could tell we were all feeling the loss of Lord Hamish. Then a tremor, light at first, followed by a low hum. And then it hit.A burst of raw energy exploded through the air like a silent wave. The ground beneath us vibrated. The lights flickered for a second. Everyone paused. The room froze.I stood still, staring at the direction of the hospital through the glass panels. My hands clenched into fists. I didn’t need anyone to tell me what, or rather, who, that energy came from.“Was that what I think it was?” I heard Ivy's voice through my earpieces.“What the hell was that?” one of the majors asked.I knew that sound. I had felt it once before , during the battle with the Seers. It was Ayla. She has released her power again.“Ayla,” I whispered, my voice low but full of panic. “Something’s wrong.”Damon looked at me. “Do we go in?”I didn’t answer. I just started walking toward the command post we had set up in the bui

AYLAI coughed slightly, trying to ignore Maria's words about me and Slade being together.“What do you mean someone doesn't want me and Slade together?” I asked as we continued walking toward a more secure part of the hospital.“Aren’t you and Slade together?” she asked with a smirk on her face.“We are not,” I replied quickly, but her face said she didn’t believe me. “It’s complicated,” I added, brushing my hair away from my face.“Well, it might be complicated,” she said, laughing a little and brushing dirt off her clothes, “but that wasn’t what I meant.”“Then what do you mean?” I asked, watching her carefully. There was something serious hidden under her teasing.“I mean someone is doing things in the shadows,” she said, voice lower now. “Someone powerful. They want to keep you and Slade apart, for a reason. A dangerous reason.”My heart skipped. “You’re not just guessing, are you?”Maria shook her head. “You are powerful, Ayla. And Slade? He’s the most powerful Lycan alive. If y

AYLA“Goddess protect,” I closed my mouth with my hands to prevent a scream. “What is it, my Lady?” My guard asked me as he took me away from the window where I just saw Lord Hamish killed.“It's Lord Hamish,” I gasped, I bent down holding my knees for comfort. “He sacrificed himself for me,” I cried out.“No, no,” Maria walked towards me. “He sacrificed himself for Mercia,” she said with tears in her eyes as well. “There is no greater sacrifice.”“Are you crying, Maria?” I asked her as she wiped her tears.“Absolutely not,” she said, chuckling. “It's just something in my eyes,” she continued wiping her face, and then looked at Amora.“What are we going to do with her?” She asked.“I'm taking her with me,” I said, and she gave me a bad idea look.“That's a bad idea, Ayla.”“She has no one, Maria. I'm not just going to leave her at the hospital when this is all over,” I countered.“You could leave her in the orphanage home. They find you family for them,” she said.“No,” I looked at A
