THE END OF A BEGINNING.

I stormed out of the house by suppressing my emotions while my heels struck the marble floors with sharp furious precision. The sound pursued me through the grand hallway while it echoed my spiraling thoughts until I grabbed my car keys and stepped into the biting afternoon air.

My fingers gripped the wheel with intensity while I drove and the outside world transformed into blurred streaks of steel gray. Upon reaching Romanov Industries I halted the car and immediately exited without pausing for breath, my actions precise and controlled—driven by purpose.

Sofia positioned herself at the table's head where she found herself encircled by the executive team members. Her brown eyes flickered with an unreadable signal upon my entrance yet time for pleasantries eluded me.

“Any progress?” I asked. The room trembled before my voice which sliced through the air, my patience having already reached its limit.

An oppressive silence took hold as Sofia drew a deep breath. “I—” she paused deliberately, shifting her eyes toward the group before locking them back onto mine, “—I contacted Nikolai’s firm. ”

The words slammed into me like a wrecking ball.

All movement ceased into suspension.

My heart thudded once before it thudded twice which happened before the full force of her betrayal sank in. “You did what? ”

Sofia winced. “Alessia, the acquisition of financial resources remains an essential requirement. Nikolai’s company possesses both capital and resources to—”

My hands collided with the table surface creating a piercing sound that caused everyone to jerk in response. “You chose to operate secretly without my knowledge? After everything I’ve said about that bastard? ”

Sofia raised her chin with a tense jaw. “The measures I took were necessary to maintain our company's financial stability. My intention was never to remain idle while everything crashes due to your refusal to abandon your personal vendetta. ”

A jagged, empty laugh slipped from my lips. "Do you believe this situation involves personal motives?" I waved my arms in an exaggerated manner throughout the room.

“The fact remains that he stands as the sole listener regardless of potential ulterior motives. ” Sofia replied.

Before my mind could register the words I spun around abruptly, blood pounding in my ears while I stormed out of the room.

As I walked to the main entrance my heels clicked on the floor while rage curled through me like fire. The instant my hands touched  the doors, my breath caught in my throat.

Nikolai Volkov stood before them exuding composed arrogance.

My anger reached new heights when I saw him, transforming my simmering rage into an uncontrollable blaze.

The afternoon light revealed his broad frame which stood as a striking figure while he exuded an effortless confidence. Perfectly styled dark wavy hair framed his face while his emerald-green eyes met mine with an unreadable gleam that infuriated me.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing? I spat marching toward him.

His lips formed a lazy smirk. “I was invited. Apologies for my tardiness I found myself in court due to a lawsuit against me. ”

An intense and inflexible rage spiraled within my being. “Disregard all information Sofia communicated to you. Your financial contribution remains unnecessary and unwanted. ”

His smirk maintained its constancy without alteration. “What drives your intense anger? ”

My feet moved nearer as I fixed him with an upward glare. “Volkov, your entire existence is a deceptive masquerade. You manipulate deceive and destroy everything in your path. I refuse to allow you to entangle my business with your grasp. ”

A small smile played on his face. “My presence here does not concern you, Alessia. An attempt was made by your assistant to initiate contact. Her request received my follow-up action. ”

“Consider it rejected.” I hissed.

Nikolai examined me extensively before his eyes displayed an unreadable flicker and he released a soft chuckle.

He turned and walked away, his departure matching the ease of his entrance.

I stood there fists clenched at my sides seething.

“I need to go home.” I muttered under my breath.

When I finally reached home that evening a deep weariness gripped my bones yet my anger remained undiminished. Scarcely a moment passed for me to catch my breath when the telephone began its relentless ringing.

My eyes briefly touched the screen's surface. Arturo.

I answered through a sudden intake of breath. “What? ”

He issued the command for my  return home. “Now. ”

His tone created an unnatural disturbance that spread unease through my being.

A strange noise emerged behind me which caused my body to become motionless.

A soft broken whimper.

A sudden constriction seized my throat causing my breath to halt. My mother.

A wave of panic engulfed me while I sprinted to my car, the return journey to the estate becoming a barely noticed blur.

As I forced my way past the grand doors, her presence made asking her whereabouts unnecessary.

There she was.

Arturo's desk chair held my mother while her hands shook and tears marked her cheeks.

She had been brought back.

Arturo sat behind his desk as calm as ever like he hadn’t just torn her from the only freedom she had left.

An intense twisting motion seized my stomach violently. “You bastard. ”

He scarcely directed his gaze toward me.Alessia, your stubbornness drove me to personally intervene and manage the situation. ”

My throat tightened when I turned to my mother and saw her flinch as I crouched beside her. “Mamma” I whispered reaching for her hands. “Are you okay? ”

Her lip trembled but she nodded weakly.

He smiled.

“As I said before—you have a choice. A stack of papers moved across the desk under his sharp gaze. You shall wed Nikolai or Isabella will sign these papers.”

My eyes briefly scanned the documents before me.

An agreement document. Signing her over to Nikolai as a human collateral, an asset.

A delicate sob emerged from my mother's lips beside me which fractured an internal part of my being.

Arturo sent the pen skidding over the desk surface. He instructed her to place her signature upon the document.

The paper remained untouched as my mother's hand hovered above it while her body shook uncontrollably.

Before she managed to touch pen to paper I unexpectedly heard my own voice speaking those words.

“Wait! ”

Alessia's POV.The atmosphere was thick with tension as I stepped outside into the night, letting the door swing shut behind me. My brain was in a whirl, so it felt like I couldn't breathe. But I knew where I was headed. Now that I was stepping out of there, there was no turning back. The deafening silence of the night was broken by the shaft of light from my headlights as I drove through the streets. I had no business being out driving at night—my heart was still sore from the betrayal. None of it mattered, though. Not when the details I had been searching for were under the same roof as the person who could be behind all this drama and secrets, and Nikolai Volkov, the genius of the drama and secrets.I walked up to the De Luca mansion—my childhood home—and it didn't sit well with me. Familiar and warped, like a warped dollhouse. I didn't see it fit to ring the bell. I had my old key.The door creaked as I pushed it open, the silence greeting me like a specter. I entered the darkened

Alessia's POV.The moment I swung my door open, the weight of the day descended upon my shoulders like a shattering sky. I let the door close behind me, leaning on it for an extra fraction of a moment. The silence in the room was suffocating, a echo of the chaos whirling inside my mind.I kicked my heels to the side and walked towards the bathroom, discarding the day like cast-off skin. The shower pounded me, steam curling upwards, but nothing could rinse away what clung to my mind. Not today. Not when the past would not remain still.I dried off and wrapped myself in a robe and headed straight to the living room. The warm light of the table lamp cast golden shadows on the mahogany desk, where I had laid out the evidence—photos, logs, call records, handwritten notes from the secret room, and that damned photo of Matteo. I didn't even know if that was his real name anymore.I took the photo of him once more—the one where he was out of focus in the back of a family reunion I never recal

Alessia's POV The room was chill—chillier than it had any business being, as if the air itself had been frozen in time. Dust shrouded everything in the secret room behind the bookshelf, but what made me uneasy wasn't the silence. It was the feeling that this room had been waiting for me. One overhead light came to life as I switched it on. My breath was caught in my throat. There were boxes—marked and unmarked. Folders stacked high as a mountain. I moved to a little side table cluttered with personal effects—her old watch, a notebook, and a crumpled photograph. My heart jumped. It was a picture of one of our family reunions, years before. But my eyes caught something out of the ordinary. In the background, partly concealed, stood a fuzzy figure. My fingers curled up. Matteo. My supposedly dead ex. In the backdrop of a family gathering I could not recall ever seeing him at. He had not been my man back them. So why had he come? I shivered. My phone quivered with indignation in m

Alessia's POVFour days. Four agonizing, painful days of waiting — pretending to be interested in boardroom meetings, grinning at sales charts, sipping coffee that I didn't even enjoy. Each second felt like a force bearing down upon my chest, and no amount of deep breaths could bring me air enough. Something in me was certain — certain that as soon as I received that call, life would be changed forever. And I was proven correct.I received the text as I headed out of work."We must speak. • Twisted vows    Game of Truth.(chapt.12)

Alessia's POV The glass doors of Romanov Industries slid open with a whisper, and I stepped inside as if I belonged. As if my mind wasn't unraveling thread by thread. The marble beneath my feet gleamed like it had no idea the world could fracture overnight, that a ghost from the past could slip into the present and stain it with questions. I clothed my armor nicely—power suit sharp, heels firm, face expressionless. But inside, I was disintegrating. The ascent in the elevator had been quiet, save for the soft thrum of machinery and the muffled boom of my heart within my ribcage. My reflection in the mirrored walls was sleek, poised. But I wasn't. Last night's revelations hadn't rattled me just—had uncovered cracks deep into the center of everything that I'd thought I'd known. Matteo. Elena. Nikolai. I arrived at the boardroom a few minutes early, catching the eye of the men already seated. A few nodded in polite greeting, some smiled warmly. Daniel smiled encouragingly from his po

  • Twisted vows    A game of truth(l) (chapt.11)

Alessia's POV As I pushed my door wide, the silence wrapped itself around me like a cloak. No quiet in its peace. No safety in its stillness. Only… tension. The sort that makes your skin prickle and constricts your lungs. Sophia hung back behind me, alert eyes scanning all the dark hour could possibly bring, her footsteps tentative as if on glass. I dropped my keys onto the console table next to the door, the clatter too loud, too final. I did not speak a word. I just kicked my heels off and padded deeper into the apartment, scarcely noticing the way my legs moved me towards the sofa. I did not cry. Not yet. I could not. I felt that if I ever parted my lips, the shriek that escaped would never subside. "I'm not leaving you alone tonight," Sophia said, closing the door behind her. Her tone was gentle, but firm only Sophia could be — as if she was holding me together with her mere presence. "I'm fine," I fibbed, folding up my legs on the couch. My own voice was distant — like i
