An Heir For The Comatose Alpha

An Heir For The Comatose Alpha

Constance was sold to a dying bloodline for a debt she never signed her name to. William Blackwood, alpha heir of the Blackwood pack, has been "in a coma" for months. Everyone believes it, including the uncle circling his territory like it already belongs to him. Everyone except Constance, who finds William wide awake in a locked wing of his own keep, and learns his coma isn't a curse gone wrong. It's a hiding place. Someone tried to break him once already. "Talk, and we both regret it," he tells her. She talks anyway. That's how it starts. What begins as a threat becomes something neither of them planned for. By the time Constance realizes she's carrying his child, she's also realized her family's debt was never bad luck. It was bait, set years before she was born. Now the man who set it knows two things he shouldn't: that his nephew is awake, and that Constance knows it too. She isn't just a candidate anymore. She's a witness. And somebody is done waiting for the coma to be real.

Chapter: chapter Eleven
ConstanceI didn't sleep so much as lie still and let my mind circle the same four walls all night — the archive, Ferdinand's watching, Elias's deadline closing in with every hour, four girls whose families were still waiting for letters that hadn't arrived. By the time gray light crept through the shutters, I'd made exactly one decision. I wasn't going to decide anything yet. Not until I knew which risk I could survive facing first.Julian arrived with breakfast and my day's schedule, and something about him seemed off before he'd said a single word. He set the tray down too carefully, the way a person does when their hands aren't quite steady, and when he straightened, there was a tightness around his eyes that hadn't been there the morning before."Rough night?" I asked, before I could stop myself. His gaze flicked to me, startled, like he hadn't expected to be seen so clearly. "Long one," he said, and didn't elaborate. He busied himself smoothing a wrinkle out of the tray cloth th

Chapter: chapter ten
ConstanceMorning brought a folded schedule slipped under the door, written in a hand too neat to belong to anyone but Ferdinand's own household. My days, apparently, no longer belonged entirely to me. Companion duties, it read. Morning attendance in the heir's chamber. Midday meal with the other retained candidates. Afternoon instruction in household protocol. Evening vigil, chaperoned.*Chaperoned.*I read the word three times before its weight settled all the way in.Julian arrived not long after, a tray balanced on one arm, and confirmed what I'd already guessed. "The regent's decided a companion shouldn't wander the keep unescorted," he said, setting the tray down with more care than it needed. "Which means, my lady, that from this morning forward, wherever you go that isn't this chamber or your own quarters, I go too.""Everywhere?""Everywhere." His eyes flicked toward William, still and silent on the bed, then back to me. There was something uneasy in his expression, like he u

Chapter: chapter nine
ConstanceI didn't run back to William's chamber. Running would have drawn eyes, and Ferdinand had just taught me that eyes were the one thing I couldn't afford.I walked instead, steady and unhurried, past corridor after corridor, my hands folded in front of me the way a proper candidate's should be. My father had never explained his debts to me. He'd come home some nights smelling of whiskey and said nothing at all, and other nights he'd said too much, muttering about ledgers and creditors and men who wouldn't return his letters. I'd always assumed it was carelessness. Bad luck. Ferdinand's question had cracked that assumption open without giving me anything to put in its place.Julian let me into William's chamber without a word, his eyes searching my face for something as I passed him in the doorway. I didn't stop to explain. I waited until the bolt slid home behind me before I let my shoulders drop.William was already sitting up, no pretense of sleep, his gold eyes fixed on me t

Chapter: chapter eight
ConstanceThe woman in violet robes did not offer her name, and I did not ask for it.She led me through corridors I hadn't walked before, past tapestries so old the dye had gone the color of dried blood, past windows that looked out over a courtyard where guards drilled in tight, silent formations. The keep felt different in daylight. Less like a place I was hiding inside and more like a place that was watching me back."You'll wait here," the woman said, stopping before a set of double doors carved with the Blackwood crest, a wolf's head wreathed in thorns. "The regent does not like to be kept waiting, but he likes candidates who arrive flustered even less. Compose yourself."Then she was gone, melting back down the corridor the way she'd come, and I was alone with the doors and my own heartbeat.I thought of what William had told me the night before. *Tell him the truth, as much of it as is safe. Do not fill silences just because they make you uncomfortable.* I smoothed the front o

Chapter: chapter seven
ConstanceWilliam didn't answer me. He stood at the balcony doors with his back to the room, his shoulders set in that hard, immovable line I was starting to recognize as the shape he wore when he didn't want me to see his face."William.""Get some rest," he said. "The night is nearly gone.""You just told me someone left a warning in this keep and you don't know who it's for, and now you want me to sleep?"He turned then, and whatever he'd been holding behind his eyes a moment ago was gone, tucked away so completely I might have imagined it. "I want you to be sharp tomorrow. My uncle does not summon candidates to his private study for pleasant conversation, and you have an audience with him at midday.”My stomach dropped."How do you know that?”His mouth tightened slightly. “I heard Ferdinand's steward mention it when he came through earlier.”He crossed back toward the bed, and for a moment I thought he might sit, might let himself be tired in front of me the way he had been for on

Chapter: Chapter Six
ConstanceI dove under the quilt so fast my elbow cracked against William's ribs. He didn't flinch. He was already moving, already arranging his limbs into the same boneless stillness I'd seen in the Royal Chamber, his face going slack, his breathing dropping into that slow, even rhythm that fooled an entire keep.I pressed myself against his side and made myself small. The door handle rattled again, harder this time. Then a key scraped in the lock, and it swung open so fast it cracked against the stone wall.Three guards filed in. Not Julian's men. These wore the black-and-silver of the regent's personal guard, and the one in front had a hand already resting on the hilt of his blade."Search the room," he barked. My heart slammed so hard I was certain the man would hear it from across the chamber. I kept my eyes shut and my face turned into William's shoulder, breathing in short, shallow pulls, praying my shaking didn't show through the quilt.Boots crossed the stone floor. A wardrob
